    I wrote a small game simulating the transition to a solar-powered economy. You can build solar panels, batteries, hydrogen storage and sell your generated electricity at market prices. Electricity demand, pricing, and weather conditions are based on realistic models for Germany.

    @hweimer

    When you have solar on your roof, you can use this energy and sell the surplus to your neighbors.

    But what happens, if all your neighbors have solar on their roof, too?

    Will there be a market price at all in a solar-powered economy?
    Or will system costs become the main factor in a calculation?

    Or will we see negative prices + H₂ generation = zero sum with good weather and extreme prices during dunkelflaute?
    And can these niches be enough for energy companies to survive?

      @AdeptVeritatis @hweimer That's the reason why _building codes_ should nudge construction of East- & West-facing roofs, or the South-facing ones to be relatively vertical towards the winter sun.

      Everyone optimising for their own maximum yield per year is doomed to favour alignment with Summer noons. It's only a 0-sum game _there/then_.

        @AdeptVeritatis Nope .. energy companies can go and suck d..

        What we need are network operators maintaining the infrastructure for a shared smart grid.

        So, electricity will in future just come with the cost for the cabling .. and not for the generation.

          @AdeptVeritatis @hweimer This is the same question as why the USA import natural gas (for example via pipeline from Canada), if they are one of the biggest natural gas exporters on this planet. They even paid pretty high prices in the past. Real econonics are complex.

            Fun little game.

            I think I found a bug: when having a building selected, then opening for example the control unit, and then trying to deselect the building it will be bought (and deselected).

            Two places for improvement: battery SOC (and gas storage) should be visible from the main screen, it feels like your facility has too much impact on the overall electricity price (if i set my battery discharge price to 11 cents, the electricity price seems to get nailed to 11 cents)

              @hweimer can you build those on top of existing buildings like supermarkets and parking garages, or to shade parking lots to simulate the fact that you do not need to topple any trees to be able to successfully build a solar energy system?

                    Thanks for your bug report, it's fixed now.

                    Your solar park having an outsized influence on the entire economy is intentional: the game assumes your actions are repeated by your competitors. If you think that 11 ct/kWh is the optimal price, your competitors will think the same.

                        To some extent you could certainly do that, maybe not at the same price per kW. But you are right that land usage is a challenge, although it's better than surface mining of coal.

                          @hweimer its better than surface mining coal, but is that the standard we want to set? 🤔

                          most sensible thing for humans and climate would be have smaller lots of solar farms in between and on top build surroundings. not as inviting to investors but over all better and decentralised.. 😌

                                    @oli

                                    The game ends on 2046-01-01 at the latest, so that part is intentional. However, you didn't see the final message because the message announcing the demand surge was interfering with it. This is fixed now, thanks for reporting it.

                                      @hweimer what a great idea, are you iterating this, did you want feedback?

                                        @hweimer 1) I think you should put in units of energy instead of money, in the displays money is front and centre, but really it is energy that we want to optimize. You could think about a solar panel in terms of how much energy it needs/harvests 2) from my extensive sim city experience i'm used to more clues about space, are there connections between solar cells, are they connected implicity? Could it be indicated what is connected? Fonts on top could be bigger, will wind turbines come?

                                          @hweimer those are just design things though, really love the idea.... On the less practical side the original Simicity let you simulate disasters like godzilla. Disasters are a key part of the climate change story... any room for thes guys?
