@GrahamDowns @someone_else @dan Be realistic. When are you actually micromanaging that stuff so precisely? I'd wager, never. Instead, you have an automation set up somewhere that does this automatically for you.
There is no actual technical reason why that "somewhere" would have to be in the "cloud". It should be in your own home, on your own local network, under your control. And if you really do want to check in on anything from outside, use a VPN to connect to your home network.

    @Silberwoelfin @someone_else @dan My dishwasher isn't internet-connected. 🙂

But I check my inverter while I'm out. All the time. And I switch it over to AC First if the sun disappears because I don't want the battery running dead.

I also check my home camera system when I'm out... Fairly often. Particular when we're away for long periods of time, and I want to check on my dog.

I also use my Google Home app from the car, to switch on the outside lights when we're driving home late at night.

I could set up a VPN at home and make sure I connect to it from my phone, but that would require installing servers at home and finding software and constant tinkering... which, to be honest, I used to love doing, I could spend hours on that sort of thing, but as I get older, more and more, I'm wanting stuff to just... work.

I'm capable of troubleshooting when it doesn't, and I'm not completely helpless like so many non-technical people, but I'd rather not have to spend all day, every day, troubleshooting.

@someone_else @dan Both my cousin and sister have a Bosch series 4 dishwasher. Cousin's is 2-3 years old, and has no WiFi connectivity, sister's is about half a year old, has WiFi, and requires you to use the app to use some features that are available through buttons on the older model, because it's so much easier to put the dishes in, find the phone, unlock it, run the app, wait for it to load, scroll down to the dishwasher, tap it, then select the program instead of pressing 2-5 buttons.

@Silberwoelfin @someone_else @dan In terms of just automating stuff... Yeah, I've got that too, especially on the inverter. If the battery drops below x% and there is AC power, then stop draining the battery. If it's after xx:xx and the battery is on y%, then charge it up to z% and stop.

But see, I'm exceptionally curious. I know the automations are there and I'm happy with them, but I still want to see what's happening. I'm not content to just let it run and never check it myself. 🙂

          Hi

@Silberwoelfin @someone_else @dan I guess you could say that while some people are opening up Facebook or Instagram and scrolling mindlessly through the algorithmic feed when they're board, I'm opening my inverter's app to see how much power we're getting and drawing, and checking the charts for today.... Or opening my camera app to see what's going on at home. Those things are *my* drugs. 😄

At least it’s not adding new AI features, I guess…

@dan Ironically, I actively want a software patch for my dishwasher. It has a full programme and quick programme. We favour the latter (we're impatient) but it doesn't include a drying cycle. I bet that could be fixed in software.

At least it’s not adding new AI features, I guess…

@dan now I'm wondering if we have the same model or if that update targeted multiple devices
(And I need to find out where they hide the changelog, I did see one in the past!)
