@zotheca @_elena “… there are plenty of cases where state police have arrested ICE "officers" for acting without legal basis in their states.”

Do you have more info about this? I’ve never heard of this. A search of DDG finds no results of such things.

    @dysamoria

I haven't created any databases. I've seen videos time and again where police officers in individual states have prohibited ICE agents from operating in their jurisdiction or arrested them and told them that they have no legal basis to act in their state. The videos went quite viral on Bluesky, but unfortunately Fediverse is always a little less up-to-date and apolitical.

@_elena wouldn't you *want* ice to see how unpopular they are? How hated they are? Wouldn't you want people to know that you don't fuck with ice? I feel like I'm missing something

@rpgwaiter @_elena Given that ICE is a bunch of shitty brown snowflakes, they do not take rejection lightly.
Will they actively follow up on the who-blocked-us list? Probably not.
Will they use it as a signal which protestor they picked off the street to be extra unfriendly to? Much more likely.

As such it's important to know what signal they can get about you. (and one of Alex Karp's companies surely will be able to give them an executive summary of who to treat extra badly) #uspol

Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.

I took a screenshot from https://clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).

The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

I'm well aware that posting this info on the Fediverse seems like a pointless exercise, but it's to raise awareness and spread the word to people active in BOTH places.

I was never really active on #Bluesky and entirely stopped using it months ago but there's no point in posting this info there because I have zero reach. Or rather: 1100+ followers and 1-2 likes (at best!) and zero comments for any post. It's like I'm shadow-banned.

If you use it and enjoy it no judgement but please be safe!

@_elena Agreed. Bsky is a much less interactive experience than here on Mastodon/Fediverse. I follow a couple of authors, a few sports sites, and check general news there. But yeah, it's mostly a "read only" environment if you aren't "somebody." I will note that those two authors do read and respond to replies.

I mostly consider Bluesky an "eMuskulated" Twitter and it seems to be replacing Twitter as a place mass media and "somebodies" go to post expecting that everyone is reading along.

@u_urban @_elena I feel like all the people who went to Bluesky because Twitter died and became the rabid zombie X learned precisely nothing. It is inevitable that Bluesky will hurt them too, but they will not go to Mastodon because any of a number of silly reasons they'll fight tooth and nail not to let go of.

I suppose a Redsky will open up and they'll go to it, then it will go bad and then a Puke Green Sky will open up and they'll go to that, and then a Gangrene Sky will open...

@nazokiyoubinbou @u_urban @_elena some of the reasons aren't silly. There are simply blocks to a lot of people joining. Understanding a bit about what it even is, finding an instance, knowing you can't move your post history etc.
Instances randomly being shut down recently have also amplified the bad/hard to use name.
Sure it doesn't ultimately matter. But those are real issues for a lot of people, just because they aren't for you doesn't mean they're not there.

@noodlemaz @u_urban @_elena Thing is, there are a bunch of people and accounts, even sites dedicated to helping people with this. I know I've tried to directly help someone before who basically just could not be bothered. I even told them what instance! The issue isn't those supposed barriers which are not really any more than, say, signing up for an e-mail service. The issue is people just don't *want* to do it. In the end that's what it comes down to. They have to want to do it...

@_elena This is also true about Mastodon*, but Mastodon actively tries to hide that fact from users and muddy the waters.

                        * It's technically hidden to users but not the admins of the instances involved, but if you're a gov agency, you're presumably on your own instance, as seems to be the custom here for the "big players."

Right away. That instance needs it so that that user cannot see the toots or can reply to it, so of course there is little that could be done differently.

@Saupreiss@pfalz.social @_elena@mastodon.social Hiding the toots from the blocked person is super dumb though. After all, they can simply see them in logged-out state, e.g. from an incognito window. Subway Tooter even has an explicit feature to do that (shows the account as ?@instance then).

The other actions - do they really need to be prevented on the local instance of the blocked person? If so, that's broken too - after all, the blocked person could simply run an instance with that code removed. From what I understand, this can only work well if the actions need to be approved (or blocked) by the blocking person.

Well, I guess that makes the entire feature pretty dumb... well, all the more reason to not use it and to just mute instead.

@NatureMC @u_urban @_elena I suspect most of Mastodon would end up blocking the entire instance with ICE on it, but I can't say for sure. And I think that would be something the servers themselves would do, not individual accounts. Perhaps some would be afraid to go that far, but I think the majority would do it.

You are right that the Fediverse is anything but perfect of course. There's only so much human moderators can do in particular. The chief difference is it's ours not some company's

I took a screenshot from https://clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).

The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

@_elena Bit too late for me, I'm already subscribed to the "all US official accounts" block list.

@bastardsheep It’s always felt like a path to bullying people. Either by giving grief to people for who is in their block list or creating awfully named lists and putting people in it. In the past I’ve seen list names that feel like it’s named in such a way they hope the people in the list see it.

@fds public information on who people block feels like a way to build a Bullying As A Service (BaaS) solution.

Bots that find people that block someone, and then direct minions to attack. This week, people who block a billionaire TERF, next week people that block the ICE account.

With some OSINT thrown in, could maybe identify the people offline and target them there.

@_elena @smattymatty hm, I think that's a vulnerable argument. If fedi would spread more, there would appear more instances that would not block ICE.

                                          @MaximilianBlum @_elena

Fedi has the tools to deal with this, BlueSky doesn't.

Toxic instances already exist, and I agree that if fedi grows, more toxic instances will exist - it will become more difficult to update blocklists and whatnot - but at least Fedi gives us the tools to deal with this.
