@troi oooh I've bookmarked your toot and I will certainly be using it (and crediting you!)

Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.
I took a screenshot from https://clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).
The safest bet is to mute (that info is private)

@_elena This is also true about Mastodon*, but Mastodon actively tries to hide that fact from users and muddy the waters.
* It's technically hidden to users but not the admins of the instances involved, but if you're a gov agency, you're presumably on your own instance, as seems to be the custom here for the "big players."
-
Right away. That instance needs it so that that user cannot see the toots or can reply to it, so of course there is little that could be done differently.
@Saupreiss@pfalz.social @_elena@mastodon.social Hiding the toots from the blocked person is super dumb though. After all, they can simply see them in logged-out state, e.g. from an incognito window. Subway Tooter even has an explicit feature to do that (shows the account as ?@instance then).
The other actions - do they really need to be prevented on the local instance of the blocked person? If so, that's broken too - after all, the blocked person could simply run an instance with that code removed. From what I understand, this can only work well if the actions need to be approved (or blocked) by the blocking person.
Well, I guess that makes the entire feature pretty dumb... well, all the more reason to not use it and to just mute instead. -

@_elena flee that nazi bar is a better option.

@NatureMC @u_urban @_elena I suspect most of Mastodon would end up blocking the entire instance with ICE on it, but I can't say for sure. And I think that would be something the servers themselves would do, not individual accounts. Perhaps some would be afraid to go that far, but I think the majority would do it.
You are right that the Fediverse is anything but perfect of course. There's only so much human moderators can do in particular. The chief difference is it's ours not some company's

"... most of Mastodon would end up blocking the entire instance with ICE on it..."
I knew I'd end up blocking .social eventually.

I'm curious, why does it matter if blocking bluesky is public or not?

@_elena Bit too late for me, I'm already subscribed to the "all US official accounts" block list.

@bastardsheep It’s always felt like a path to bullying people. Either by giving grief to people for who is in their block list or creating awfully named lists and putting people in it. In the past I’ve seen list names that feel like it’s named in such a way they hope the people in the list see it.
@fds public information on who people block feels like a way to build a Bullying As A Service (BaaS) solution.
Bots that find people that block someone, and then direct minions to attack. This week, people who block a billionaire TERF, next week people that block the ICE account.
With some OSINT thrown in, could maybe identify the people offline and target them there.

@smattymatty indeed 🥲
@_elena @smattymatty hm, I think that's a vulnerable argument. If fedi would spread more, there would appear more instances that would not block ICE.

Fedi has the tools to deal with this, BlueSky doesn't.
Toxic instances already exist, and I agree that if fedi grows, more toxic instances will exist - it will become more difficult to update blocklists and whatnot - but at least Fedi gives us the tools to deal with this.
