Especially as you say these people are able to gather large followings and get them to believe lies. So nothing is stopping them from lying and using the controls you want.

As far as I know I haven't suggested any specific blocklists, I've suggested people go to Oliphant's list of blocklists and see which of those lists is a fit for their server.

Are you saying Oliphant is problematic or have I misunderstood?

There ARE things stopping people from abusing the system, for example many of the blocklists have voting systems to prevent an individual adding stuff maliciously.

None of these methods are perfect, but it would be even worse to have no blocklist at all.

That's why I suggest admins look at the blocklists and their methodologies and choose the list(s) they feel are best and most reliable.

Yup, if a server hosts a bigot and knows what they're up to but refuses to remove their account, the next step is to tell your own admin about this so they can consider defederating the rogue server.

It's another reason why it's important to report bigotry and abuse even when it doesn't involve you directly, because the abuser may be hiding it from the victim.

(And of course people should be reporting abuse anyway as an act of solidarity.)

If so, trying to solve the initial problem with a maybe technical approach, would be fighting the symptoms instead of the root cause. Because the problem is then, that people more or less solely decide based on trust. Why they do that must be researched like maybe lack of education, the design of social media, cultural background, etc.

You are aware that there are many better moderated instances around? Mastodon.social has a pretty bad name, it's just too big to block for most servers. It's definitely worth looking around, if you're not doing that already.

@FediTips, the main thing is not to turn out to be a bigot yourself, a bigot who blocks people simply for dissent. And it is important to remember that the main threat to the free Internet and freedom in general is not misguided people, but monopolies and the politicians who serve them.

Which was an intelligence based insult… I dont think telling people you hate them for ruining their life is “insulting”. I think that is something else entirely. Its an emotion which I expressed. All too often bigots hide their bigotry as "dissent". "I'm not a bigot, I just have a different opinion about the right of disabled people to live a life in dignity." And then they DARVO if they are blocked or reported or called out.

We were able to block them by defederating all the bridges, and that's worked perfectly ever since.

Not on Fediverse but still and doesn't change the fact that I got at first harassed and verbally molested online and later in the real life brutally attacked and beaten by same a-holes. And all because the people who were obliged to react (admins and moderators of an well known, "reputable" IT forum) did not do so and, through their ignorance, allowed the escalation. What's more, they even tried to sweep the case under the carpet and delete the evidences.

The usual dilemma. Instead of addressing the criticism of the Fediverse, which has been described very well here, some people prefer to write "Bluesky is stupid." The uncomfortable truth is that the accounts that were kicked off Bluesky for anti-Semitism have found a good home in the Fediverse and are still being courted here.

First of all, nice strawman! You definitely know that your fake criticism does not adress anything that was written and only tries to trigger people.

Second, mixing antisemitism allegations in a discussion is no red flag AT ALL, right?
