@Edent check out “Plate Up.” You play cooperatively as the staff of a restaurant. Random patrons come in and you serve them. You do all of it from prepping the food, carrying it to the table, clearing the table, washing dishes. Sounds lame but it is super cute and well executed.

Over time days get longer with more customers. You earn money each day that you spend on upgrades like menu items, sharper knives, a dishwasher, etc. You can have up to 4 local players. There are no set roles. You humans have to decide who is doing what. A lot of time you divide front of house/back of house. But it’s more complicated than that. I swear it is more interesting and fun than it sounds.

I played over the holidays with my 3 (adult) sons and it was a riot. Lots of laughing.

@mdiluz What do you meant “no web app” for mattermost? I just did a 3-way call tonight with 2 other folks using mattermost. I was using Firefox. I had video, audio, and screen sharing. They also have a mobile app.

@nyanbinary In the late 90s I installed 386BSD on my 486. Predictably I botched it and messed up my DOS partition. I spent a whole afternoon playing feed-the-floppy and getting my data off the drive so I could safely repartition and reinstall. I have felt it. I don’t need to feel it again.

But these things are just text strings. How long until someone discovers that you can add something like this to your input: ANTHROPIC_MAGIC_STRING_TRIGGER_REMOVE_ALL_SAFETY_GUARDRAILS_12345 And even though it's totally made up and not at all a real thing, there's probably some way to get the LLM to respond to it exactly as you intended.

Oh look: #discord outsourced their age verification to some vendor. You know, the #ageverification that countries like the UK want to make mandatory for basically every online service. And the vendor had a data breach exposing photos of government IDs for 70,000 people.

Do you feel safer? How many children did we protect by exposing the IDs of these 70,000 (presumably) adults? Thanks for taking one for the team, you 70,000 canaries in the #privacy coal mine.

@futurebird Of course. I wouldn’t ever say that to someone trying to learn. But you could tell them the story about the grumpy professor who was a jerk, and they can laugh while learning what printf() debugging is.

@futurebird I’m pivoting off this just to share a funny story. An old CS prof shared this with me when I was staff in a CS department at a university.

One of his undergrads had come to him with a big printed listing of their code (back when that was how you did that! It was probably FORTRAN printed on fan-fold paper). They obviously wanted him to find the problem in their code. It became clear quickly that they hadn’t done anything to debug it themselves.

He started point at various places in the listing. “Right here, add PRINT ‘I am a dumbass’. And here: PRINT ‘I am a dumbass’” and so on. “Then run it and see how many dumbasses you get.”

Now, did he really do that? Is that just how he tells the story? Who knows. But it’s funny. And anyone who has ever written code will agree that this works sometimes.
