It's wild having grown up in a time when massive amounts of effort was put into encouraging young people to become software engineers and get into computer science, and that cohort finally reaches an age where they're entering the job market or are well into a career and suddenly it's "Ehh, never mind. Sorry you built your life around this, we don't need your skills now."
It's a double edged sword. Yes, mastodon.social is large and unweildy, but as the default it kept me from ignorantly joining a toxic instance like beigeparty. I'm for change, but it's yet to be seen how this plays out in practice.
A better solution might be something like an official introductory instance where you get 6 months to get your footing and then it prompts you to migrate and gives you a selection of vetted servers. Like pushing a baby bird out of the nest.
My love of snow and ice grows as I get older. I used to get frustrated by the inconvenience and discomfort that can come with it, but when you accept winter's rules and work on it's terms it's an opportunity for a lot of pleasantness, joy and coziness.
It's extremely inspiring to see. I watched a video of a former Black Panther, and he talked about how chaos is a tool of the oppressors, they want riots, they want violent backlash and destruction they can show on the news. By contrast it's self-control, patience and community organization that's the key to making people-power into a real, sustainable bulwark against fascism.
You resist without giving the fascists anything they can use to escalate or create favorable narratives.
@rufustheduck Think of instances like little territories, and they all have telephone lines connecting them. Each territory can be a different size and has its own admin and mods, and those admins can choose to close the phone lines to other instances if they don't like how they're run.
I haven't seen many issues on mastodon.social and I've seen no racism, but I do think some other instance owners/mods get upset because they have less influence, but also can't cut it off because of its size.

I don't have a security system, but I have a friend who uses Axis brand cameras along with Blue Iris software, as they aren't controlled by a mega-corp nor by China.
If you can run your own local instance on an old desktop or something it's probably the best way to avoid getting creeped on by governments and corporations.

I have trouble getting too excited about mid-sized nations giving up on one world order farce in order to throw us all into a new world order farce that appears to be the same but simply has three fascist police states calling the shots regionally instead of one floundering to do it globally.
If anything I suspect we'll see fascism grow more efficient now that the big three have agreed to retreat into their respective spheres of influence and no longer have to stretch themselves.

As a millennial I always got the impression that the Boomer generation (and I only speak generally, obviously) was planning on dragging every single thing they can into the grave when they finally go. The economy, the environment, our democracies etc.

Not strictly free, but the free version of DaVinci Resolve (video editing) has a ton of utility, they aren't stingy with the features they allow. Linux support as well, for those who partake in such things.
