What’s it like living in Minneapolis / St. Paul right now?

This weekend, ICE abducted two people straight out of a car near where I live. Just straight up stopped the car and took them.

I found out because neighbors were trying to figure out what to do with the car, which ICE just left there blocking the street.

The car appears to be a rental. It had Amazon packages in the back seat — just received? Or (more likely) being delivered? Probably these were people just out there doing their delivery job, try to make ends meet.

But we don’t know, because nobody was able to find out who they are.

I hope they get out. I hope they get their car back. I hope a lot of things.

Are people going to local council meetings and demanding protection by local government and police department? If the local government refuses to protect their citizens, then they’re culpable

@inthehands I keep wanting this to happen in a stand your ground state where someone (rightfully) defends themselves against an unidentified masked goon trying to kidnap them.

@inthehands The police chief actually said there were cars also left with pets in them that they had to get animal control for. These people are monsters. Actually, I wouldn’t mind taking their citizenship away since they’re acting like Nazis and not Americans. That’s way too much to ask for, but I do hope to see some in jail.

There was at least once incident in Dec in which there was a car left with •children• in it after ICE abducted the parent.

We have seen now from the many phone calls made to 911 that the police will not get involved. We are on our own when it comes to ICE.

Yes, a big question here is what •kind• of protection we’re demanding and from •whom•.

The Minneapolis Police have very low trust. They’re officially forbidden by the city from assisting ICE, but…few people imagine they’re not on ICE’s side. Some argue we should demand their protection anyway to force the issue; others don’t want to touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Gov Walz has talked about mobilizing the Minnesota National Guard to keep the peace. That’s a more credible idea — they’re a lot less fashy than the Mpls Police — but still not clear that would be welcome. One idea I’m warm to is having •unarmed• NG protecting vulnerable locations.

At a certain point, making a clever sign and going to a protest feels insanely inefficient..

I am so sorry you are dealing with this.

To try to prevent these situations, Human Rights First created an app called "Ready Now" for immigrants or anyone who might be abducted. I have it even though I'm white and a citizen by birth, because I do ICE watch. It gives you a "panic button" to push on your phone to send an emergency message to your chosen contacts that ICE may have taken you. Mine just asks my neighbor to feed the cats and get me a lawyer.

The most important thing about the line "a few bad apples" is the rest of the quote.

It's not "a few bad apples are fine, you can eat around them" it's "a few bad apples spoil the bunch" but somehow has been twisted to mean the opposite of what it's supposed to.

They can “stand with ICE” all they want, but if ICE is breaking the law, their duty is to uphold the law. If they’re purposely allowing crime, then maybe demand resignations from the leadership

Mmm yeah but no. Firstly, it's irrelevant right now to the situation in the US. Commemorating the victims is something to be done AFTER the battle is won. Which it hasn't been.

Also... the stolpersteine movement is a bit problematic.. they contact families and shame them into sponsoring/paying to have a stone installed. It started off ok, but I am not at all comfortable about how it has developed

They can “stand with ICE” all they want, but if ICE is breaking the law, their duty is to uphold the law. If they’re purposely allowing crime, then maybe demand resignations from the leadership

People have been demanding resignations from police leadership all over the country for years now. Especially in Minnesota after George Floyd's murder.

Ah, if only upholding the law were actually what police do
