    @glyph I would describe it as a hit piece in which the author airs out grievances that leftists don't think that "AI" is the top of the list right because of how patently obvious it is to the author that infinite growth is just around the corner, or as the conservative intellectual magazine he quotes from (there being no serious intellectual magazines on the left, you see) put it: "After all, the LLMs are getting better all the time."

    And jeez, what the heck is it with those kookie lefties anyway, shouldn't they be seriously discussing and strategizing the end-game for when the Infinite Growth Machine swallows all of society?!

    It made me grumpy to read and I suspect it would make you grumpy too.

        @glyph selected quotes:

        «The Biden administration took AI seriously in its last years.»

        «More concretely, not taking AI seriously might blind the left to its political uses.»

        «One key sign: conservative intellectual magazines are in better shape than their left counterparts, generally blending **a reasonably accurate grasp of the technology** with concerns about social costs, along with — and this is something missing from nearly any portion of the left — some hope for what AI might mean for humanity. Take this, from Commentary: “As we learn to live with AI, I believe we’ll become more comfortable with the notion that these models ‘think.’ **After all, the LLMs are getting better all the time.”**» (emphasis mine)

        bonus points for taking a quote from an openai head and running with it as the fundamental premise of the article without bothering to like, argue that it's true

                @SnoopJ @glyph I take AI deadly serious, and still don't use it. Also when someone tells me I'm missing out over.. and over.. and over.. for some reason my FOMO actually DEcreases.

                  @JessieImproved @glyph perhaps the true politics of "AI" is turning into a corncob yelling "it's still the future, we can still find a way to break even with it!"

                      It was a good read, I boosted both, together they're a great example of the question of what it means to be a 'good person' in our broken system of today, that's why the Smashing Frames title was striking to me, they call it right out.

                      Side note: Just discovered Smashing Frames today, (drama aside) I've found a few regular writers with some amazing work since joining the fedi, it's been interesting, refreshing, exciting, & unfortunately occasionally disappointing.

                        @SnoopJ thanks for the pointer! I looked for it and honestly it doesn't seem so bad, maybe my standards are low?

                        https://www.transformernews.ai/p/the-left-is-missing-out-on-ai-sanders-doctorow-bender-bores

                        The main position, which is that the left is broadly missing out on AI by being mostly skeptical and not engaging with the technology seriously, seems broadly true to me.

                        It has plenty of sourced quotes, reflects some interesting positions. Unclear what people's peeves are, will review this thread to learn more 🙂
