When I lived somewhere we reached these temperatures I had some rules: if it was first thing in the morning it had to be above ~20F, if it was going home from work (and the bike was already at work) it had to be above ~10F. It has to do with the convenience of having my bike where I'm located (don't want to walk it somewhere or leave it somewhere) and whether I was showering in the morning and would have wet hair. My hair might be pretty short, but even pretty short hair will literally freeze if it's ~10F and you ride for 15 minutes. It was kind of disturbing to take my helmet off and have my hair feel crackly as the ice broke up.

TLDR: The difference from 32F to 0F is pretty big from a comfort perspective.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3 #bikeNite We don't get colder than freezing around here, and I'm very unlikely to go on holiday somewhere that is colder.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3. As a rule of thumb, I won't ride in below freezing temperatures, because in Portland, that usually means the roads are sheets ice, and my e-bike back tire likes to slide out from under me if I brake too hard when it's slick.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3: Zero "hero" I guess, though there's more to it than temperature. Depends on wind and humidity (and sometimes whether the sun is out). Single digits F is common around here right now and I ride every day. Below zero or serious windchill means more layering and planning. #BikeNite

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3: The big deal for me is "is there ice and is it invisible?"

I do ride below freezing, but I've got to trust the trails not to be iced over or I'm noping out.

personal record is 11 below F done twice, after which I decided it just took tooo long to put that many layers on and it was risky, and tehre's this bus thing. It broke my "would you be satisfied saying why you were out there if something landed you in ER?"
Ice/snow? Why should I take *those* risks? It's tricky enough to drive without having to go around me in the snecked down roads.
Occasionally -- maybe twice a year -- I think, "oh, this would have been better if I had a car."

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3. It doesn't get below freezing where I live now. In my time in Minneapolis, though, 32°F/0°C was my cutoff for riding for pleasure. On a rare above-freezing day in January, I would go for a long ride to savor it. Below freezing, I would only ride where I needed to go as quickly as possible and then hurry inside to warm up; that, I still did as low as 8°F (it was a relatively mild winter). #BikeNite

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite We rarely get -15 "C or -20 "C in Berlin anymore due to manmade climate heating, but some days to -10 °C and some weeks to -5 °C we just currently have.

And many cyclists still do their regular commute ( #mdRzA = mit dem Rad zur Arbeit = with the cycle to work // #mdRzE = …zum Einkaufen = …to shopping) here, including me. ☃️

Some even longer tours ( #FrostPendeln = frosty commute // #mdRddG = mit dem Rad durch die Gegend = …around the scenery).

It was kind of disturbing to take my helmet off and have my hair feel crackly as the ice broke up.

TLDR: The difference from 32F to 0F is pretty big from a comfort perspective.

                                    #bikenite Wednesday I rode in b/c it was 24 F but stated that "if it's 10 F tomorrow, I"m on the bus."
It was 10. Even though I was on the bus, it did not snow, though.

                                      @MarkBrigham has a poll:

Q3. How low do you go? (Coldest temperature in which you willingly cycle).

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite I've done it down to -11F with the right clothing and planning it's fine. I will get my clothes sweaty so I always carry dry layers that I can stand still in case something goes wrong and I have to stop. Only thing that really prevents me is if it's too sloppy and I have to share with cars.

I can maintain myself much better than most people can drive, and usually it's harder to walk on ice after I stop than to ride.

My coldest ride this season was -11F, with -31F wind-chill. I bailed after 3 miles for a 6 mile round trip.

@MartyCormack @MarkBrigham @bikenite @ascentale Ilearned when I commuted in that ... that I *had* to peel off the layers when I got to work or the cold air would work in the rest of the way and I'd be cold. I'd hve 5 layers on so by the time the cold got through them, I was putting out enough heat to stave it off... but I wouldn't have wanted to go longer than my 45 minute commute. And ... I stopped doing that when I got comfortable with the bus.

#BikeNite A3. Though, prefer high 50's and 60's. Will briefly go out in much colder temps, as long as it's not raining.

@ai6yr #bikenite I figured out 42 with 14 mph headwind and maybe a little drizzle .... makes me **really happy** really fast.
                                          I decided it's m y Celtic soul.
