    I have cultivated a strategy which guarantees I always win at Monopoly: I lose as quickly as possible. The remaining players think I've lost, but they're wrong. I escaped first, so I win.

    @fesshole Monopoly is like the writing on Rassilon's tomb. Who loses wins and who wins loses.

      The game's old, and was very cobbled together ad hoc.

      So it doesn't have the considered design a lot of modern games do, in terms of come-back mechanics, player agency, variety.

      But it's still surprisingly playable if you're sticking to the rules. The short-game rules excise the repetitive part of the end-game completely.

        @fesshole There should be a "Build affordable housing" block to land on. and an e-Bike token.

          @fesshole this is literally the way I play. In fact I have played this as a variant where everyone has to buy everything they can afford when the land on it and the first person out wins. It is far, far more fun.

              @fesshole But what is the best strategy to lose quickly at monopoly? Decline to buy any properties? That would definitely lose it, but would still take a while.

                @fesshole The Monopoly nerd, fresh off another victory in online play, washes down a handful of Flaming Hot Cheetos with a fresh Mountain Dew. He forcefully cracks his knuckles and says under his breath “500 char limit… more than enough space to let OP, nay… THE WORLD, know that if you dislike Monopoly, you are obviously playing it wrong. I’ve waited a lifetime for this moment to shine.” while ignoring yet another Reddit Moderator notification.

                  @SocialCommentaryBot It’s not supposed to have things like come-back mechanics. The whole point of the game is that it is brutal and unpleasant. You were supposed to play the Prosperity Rules if you wanted an enjoyable experience.

                    @mathew
                    The Landlord's Game is not the same as modern Monopoly: "Brer Fox an' Brer Rabbit" failed despite it supposedly having the "enjoyable" rules compared to its successor.

                    Authorial intent of a distinct progenitor game doesn't really come into this,
                    even if we were to assume the intent was to make one half of the gameplay experience "unpleasant", rather than merely illustrative of monopolistic principles.

                    Come-back mechanics *are* antithetical to the theming, but that's beside the point.

                          @fesshole Absolutely this. Props for losing as quickly as possible. Losing at Monopoly is a slooooow and bloody business. That's why I don't like the game.
