If you wanted to send me a monetary tip for my excellent Mastodon posts, which platform would you prefer to use?
-
@Edent Payment provider.
@Edent This being said, I like the idea. I had a coffee tip jar on some of my github projects - but it never amounted to much. I think I scored a literal coffee with it. And these tip jars are also a hellhole tax wise.

What if Mastodon had this button?
(I am not involved in core development. This isn't an official proposal. I'm just noodling about with ideas. Don't shout at me in the comments or get weird.)
@Edent I'd be afraid that it would sharpen incentives to steal posts, impersonate, steal accounts, and maybe write divisive things.
I'm somewhat hopeful that some limits (rate-, account age-, ...-dependent most likely) on part of both involved instances could curb the post stealing and impersonation problems.
Can you think of a way to meaningfully experiment with that in a way that doesn't need to involve the potential-tipper's instance, only potential-tippee's? -

@Edent If I'm going to make small tips online, needs to be something that takes credit card as I have a credit card that offers no fee overseas transactions but international bank transfers have huge fees and depending on the type of account paypal can too

@Edent Maybeee, for people producing art, videos, etc and using Mastodon to promote, though in that case there are existing payment options available (Patreon, etc). Not sure it needs to be built in here too.

I actually think a one-off donation method would be nice. Sometimes the monthly defaults for Patreon and the like puts off people, especially in this time of cost of living crises.
Lots of things I'd love to donate to but I can't do subscriptions ATM because I forget about them.
-
@tobyjaffey do you know of any payment providers which offer a link like that?
@Edent Nope, just an idea

@Edent would be really interesting

@Edent To spin it even a bit further/weirder?. Could tipping/subscriptions be a federated service itself? You set a limit on your account and can reach anyone that has it enabled. As a bonus you get to decide whether to tip public on a specific post or to the recipient or as DM.
Anyone not interested in the noise could just mute the servers. -

@Edent I'm afraid integrating something like this into the platform would lead to perverse incentives like monetization, bots, bait posting, influencer culture and a lot of the capitalist nonsense that has destroyed mainstream social media.
I think it's fine to ask for tips or donations or aid in a post but where the actual platform is concerned we need to remember the medium is the message. We don't want the message of Mastodon to be "every post can make you money."

@cdonat literally zero people use that. Anything which requires installing yet another app is a non-starter.
If everyone never uses something new, we're stuck for ever with the old ways.
Many people would consider crypto, or PayPal non starters.

@Edent I have unsubscribed from many US digital services including Patreon which I used to support open source projects and am in the market for a European alternative. Stripe may be an option.
I would prefer to see Fediverse clients adopt Signal's approach of flagging supporters w a badge. Might be a handy filter sometimes. As in, show me posts from contributors only.

@Edent
GNU Taler* > Wero** > bank transfer/instant payment***
Definitely not PayPal (deleted my account few weeks ago, finally)___
* Once it's there for real
** Once enough European banks get their act together
*** instant for EU transfers, yay! -
@maexchen1 @Edent @cdonat It more like $3,000 today and $0.3 tomorrow.
-
@jalict what's more likely - people installing a browser extension or having direct link in the UI?
@Edent 100% direct link
My suggestion wasn't to imply a more effective solution.
I am mostly suggesting as having it directly integrated into Mastodon would make Mastodon a viable place for commercial products to live.. And I would argue that that's one of the core issues of other problems in terms of advertisement pollution.
Perhaps that is a completely different conversation though!

@Edent i don't see how that would work for "mastodon" as a whole. maybe individual servers might like to get into bed with a payment processor, but "Mastodon"?
Might as well ask if we'd like a "reverse global warming" button. sure, that would be useful. But. But.

@krapp I'm curious. What do you think the difference is between having a link in a profile and a link on every post?

@Edent I think github sponsorships took no comission? Otherwise some kind of direct bank trasfer.
