@LukefromDC Is Open Street Map a viable navigation alternative?

@sleepingexplorer Yes it is and the Osmand frontend works offline wirh predownloaded maps. It is NOT safe however to type addresses inro a phone for this, not even into a text editor. If you are ambushed at a stoplight it's a lot faster and easier to stuff a paper map in your mouth than to reliably lock a phone. Remember too some folks will have weak passphrases or phones "backed up" to Google or Apple.

Please do not type the address of any migrant hiding from ICE into any electronic device while in a car that can be ambushed by cops, and do not take your phone outside your house without keeping it locked with no biometrics if you are forced to rely on electonics to transmit or receive grocery delivery locations.

@nickapos @LukefromDC this is wild speculation based on a screenshot of an unsourced post, please get a grip (I tried to find a source and don't see anybody reporting on this, I'll keep an eye out but this could easily be rage bait)

      @ryanprior
ICE has followed people delivering groceries to immigrant families. They have also regularly waited outside grocery stores.
No they're probably not following random white people just in case they're delivering groceries to immigrants.
Therefore, yes they're probably using tracking and surveillance resources at their disposal target people they think are delivering groceries to immigrants to intimate them and target the immigrants. Some of that requires a warrant, some only a subpoena and a shitty company unwilling to push back, some requires neither and is readily available to them such as software to access the same location data companies can just buy.

People delivering groceries for immigrants should:
-Be aware ICE could end up following you and have a plan for if they do
-Be in touch with local organized networks or organizations about infosec and opsec best practices
-Do what they can to leave less electronic trail about what they're up to

@LukefromDC Is there evidence that is how they are tracking people? Have any of the claims by this person been confirmed by reliable sources? Is this a widespread phenomena or a few isolated incidents?

Are they actually tracking phones, or are they just parking outside stores and physically following people?
The latter would be incredibly impractical, due to the number of grocery stores in the city and the massive number of people visiting them on a daily basis, so I highly doubt that is the case.
The post is inconsistent; the first part implies people are being followed, but the second implies ICE is somehow using GPS apps. Which apps? The OOP doesn't say.

There are many ways to track a phone; I think its far more likely they would just buy the data from data brokers or get it from phone providers, two practices law enforcement is known to use (based on my memory; I can find a citation if you want)
As such, just not using GPS apps provides a false sense of security.

I remain very skeptical of the vague claims made by a random X user. I also can't find the original post on the X account allenanalysis.

@LukefromDC So phone manufacturers provide tracking history to ice now?
That means that both Apple and Google disclose all the location history of people?

@nickapos 3ed party data aggregators buying data from app vendors such as Facebook do, and much less accurate tower location data is also bought and sold.

@nickapos Google at least supposedly moved location history to on-device to avoid abortion-related subpeonas from states like Texas.

@sleepingexplorer @LukefromDC It's a database rather than an application. But the data is widely used by offline navigators like Comaps.

But honestly, if you are involved in this sort of activity you owe it to those you are assisting to memorise such information.

@LukefromDC for the record, as someone with an information privacy background we wholeheartedly endorse this advice. if an address is sensitive, do not search it in GPS, do not put it in your contact list, do not type it into a phone or computer at all. write it on paper.

and, yes, eat it if it comes to that.

@calcifer @LukefromDC Yeah cellular companies have always done this, but I had not heard so far that they could track people live by using data from Google or Apple Maps.
Using the cell towers is not as precise as using gps.
Also GPS is a passive service, so only via the map apps something like this can be done.

This is actually familiar. In germany we learn this in school. The nazis raided homes to get to hidden jewish families.

The movie inglorious basterds depicts this exact thing.

Maybe you need an equivalent to "the bear jew" and repeat the scene from the movie?

                                      @nickapos @LukefromDC @kusuriya depends on one's personal case.

                                      • AFAIK #Canada considers the #USA a "safe country of origin", but #Germany does not.
                                        • Either way, I'd recommend to seek non-asylum options first. Like the #OpportunityCard.

OFC this is #NotLegalAdvice and I'd recommend to seek advice first.

                                      • @marcel and his colleagues may be able to check your options and eligibility.
                                        • Do inquire about availability tho first... Worst-case they may refer you to another, equally qualified spechalist...

@nickapos @LukefromDC @kusuriya as for job applications: I do have some recruiters in my organizer that are eager to find IT spechalists.

U.S. citizens can, according to @AuswaertigesAmt 's own Visa Navigator change their status post-entry.

                                        • And for IT you only need 24 months of work experience within the last 60 months to qualify.
                                          • Again, #NotLegalAdvice…
