Dear Europe,

@Merovius
The biggest turning point here in the US was 9/11 and the patriot act. That was when a lot of rights were removed from citizens but I think it's been brewing since LBJ after JFK was assassinated. The thing about US authoritarianism is that for most of it's existence it grew inside of corporate America who, in pursuit of profits, infiltrated politics. Most didn't realize this and continued to support companies who did the wrong thing. The misunderstanding that we voted only in November and not every day with every dollar we spent was key... And sadly many still don't understand this.
@alexwild@bobkmertz @alexwild TBF as a German, I'm the last one to claim we aren't vulnerable and problematic. Like, we utterly failed to prosecute *a lot* of high-ranking Nazis and even today, a lot of the richest people in Germany got there on the back of WW2 slave labor.
Then again, this is also - at least partly - the fault of the US, which didn't want to prosecute industrialists, so as to not undermine capitalism in anticipation of the cold war…
But yeah, obviously we are far from innocent.
-
@dianshuo @alexwild @Merovius Our bigger problem is our governments have outsourced their infrastructure to American companies, that are more-or-less openly complicit with, or controlling the selection of, the US government.
Before you suggest European companies would be better - don't. The problem is the private companies and wealth concentration.
They're already inside the perimeter. Time to secure and eradicate the big tech companies from the public sphere.
-
Dear Europe,
I know you're having a tremendous time yelling at Americans, and fair enough for that, but get your houses in order because what happened in the United States is being orchestrated in your countries, and it may prevail as long as you let this sort of thing grow.
@alexwild Lol. The reason we've been yelling at USAnians for two years is because we're already well practiced at shouting down fascism at home. You didn't listen and elected the psychotic tangerine toddler.

There have been Nazis in the US for over a century... They had their meetings in fairly public forums in the 20s and 30s and there's no doubt they had their influence on government but I think the 60s when that began it's institutionalism into government.I'm not intending to point fingers or absolve any entity of responsibility. Just trying to share what I have seen and how I've interpreted our history from inside the US.

I can't tell you enough how the "look at what those dumb Americans did to themselves" blinds you from what is happening to all the established institutions, and sends you down the path to further disintegration.
@alexwild We're not the first and we won't be the last.

Das wissen wir in Europa! Da gibt es viele die sich für Migranten einsetzen Aber leider auch Nazis wie AfD, RN, FPÖ ...

@alexwild yes this is very true. And we are fighting, but it seems that many in Germany are not aware of the issue. They ignore it and conservative politicians even play with the thought to make a coalition with the AfD - the fascist party.
-
No, I don't hang out with AfD types, why would I?
My impression was that AfD was not concentrating on christianity the way MAGA does, but maybe I missed something? I'm sure I've got Germans in my timeline, maybe they can elaborate?

@alexwild Saw an image earlier of one of the armored vehicles pulling in to the scene of the recent murder in Minneapolis and someone was pointing out that it was Canada made and ICE had recently bought a whole fleet of them.
We didn't just do this to ourselves.
-
@robcinos @alexwild Yes. I'm reluctant to tag @Npars01 in again, not having even asked her, but... She does the most comprehensive rundown of the individual humans bankrolling this attempt to re-exert and solidify control over the masses by the few.
These are the people bending reality to their design. How do we stop it?
-
@MissGayle @robcinos @alexwild @Npars01 It's a start, and an essential step. Replication is vital though if it's not to be in vain.

@geoffl Nah. You're shouting down Americans because you think you're smarter. And yet the UK was the first to fall, with Brexit. I have no real interest in discussing any of this with you, I just thought it would be good to remind anyone who thinks their shit doesn't stink that, in fact, it does. I haven't seen anyone else misunderstanding not just the US, but their own country. Congratulations. Now catch a mute.

Billionaires worldwide are trying to take our world.
Billionaires have hired racist thugs worldwide to baby bang bang on our democracies.
It rime to end it, and it's time to end billionairism.
How end billionairism? Fair wages, fair pensions, end monopolies, off shoring and fair taxation. Very fair. Robust.

It's almost as if countries and nationalism are designed to divide the vast majority with common interests, to make them easier to rule by a global oligarchy.

This may seem like a fruitless game of "Whack a Mole", but it is a multi-front hybrid war of economic, cyber, & kinetic forces which must be countered in similar fashion
Multi-layered & multifunctional responses are necessary, equally broad
A lot of it can be copied from the FDR & LBJ legacy of post-WW2
1. "Trading with the Enemy" investigations
2. Follow the Money & transparency laws for campaign finance.
Make funding a fascist movement radioactive1/

@alexwild Yelling? Nobody I know is. And we are certainly not "having a tremendous time" watching.
We are well aware that Steve Bannon and others who dance at feet of American oligarchs for coins have boasted openly about their plans to export fascism to Europe. Tens of millions of people died here last time round. We haven't forgotten.
Greetings and good luck from Ireland. 20% non-native born (+10k Americans in 2025). 0 far right politicians in parliament. Unarmed police.

We cannot trust anyone who’s operating at the national level and barely anyone operating at the state level.
Despite some verbal pushback from various state officials here and there, there has been no response up to the moment.
We would have to see something like multiple mayors and multiple governors all speaking in unison on this matter.
It would help if politicians from abroad said something
