@Natasha_Jay they’re clearly sugar-deer and thus must stay away from the rain so won’t melt away 😝😁

@Natasha_Jay seems this pic is all over the internet, oldest I could find is on Reddit. Sometime before #genAI got this convincing. Who knows if it is real?

@Natasha_Jay If the picture was taken in Nara, the behaviour would be plausible (the kanji mentioned in the ALT text are as common in Japan; a Japanese speaker could clarify).

Nara Park has tame sika deer (Cervus nippon; also known as spotted deer or Japanese deer). These roam through the town, especially in Nara Park. Snack vendors sell sika senbei (deer crackers) to visitors so they can feed the deer, the deer virtually walk among the tourist crowds. Some deer have learned to bow in order to receive senbei from people.

@Natasha_Jay I noseyed around as it seemed a bit familiar.
Turns out it's not Nara but Miyajima, an island off Hiroshima.
We visited last year and it's really nice.

Went there in 2013, handed out one portion of deer snack. Once I ran out, one of the deer tried to steal my wallet from my jeans pocket instead, I kid you not.
