    @Natasha_Jay If the picture was taken in Nara, the behaviour would be plausible (the kanji mentioned in the ALT text are as common in Japan; a Japanese speaker could clarify).

    Nara Park has tame sika deer (Cervus nippon; also known as spotted deer or Japanese deer). These roam through the town, especially in Nara Park. Snack vendors sell sika senbei (deer crackers) to visitors so they can feed the deer, the deer virtually walk among the tourist crowds. Some deer have learned to bow in order to receive senbei from people.

    That's a good call. I admit I thought of Japan too, but often in Japan you'd have both Kanji and Kana but yes very possible , thank you ...

              No, these are not rain-deer—just deer in the mist!
              I’m French and not very used to American puns—does this one actually land and sound funny?

                  I found it in google street view. It's a short walk uphill from The Deer Park Inn, in Nara.

                    If that's Nara it's very likely 😊

                    @Natasha_Jay I noseyed around as it seemed a bit familiar.
                    Turns out it's not Nara but Miyajima, an island off Hiroshima.
                    We visited last year and it's really nice.
                    A deer wanted to try and make friends with me until it found a strangers magazine more interesting

                      Went there in 2013, handed out one portion of deer snack. Once I ran out, one of the deer tried to steal my wallet from my jeans pocket instead, I kid you not.

                          @Natasha_Jay @dazzr I'm Japanese, but I don't live in Nara.
                          However, the photo you posted appears to have been taken in Nara, Japan.
                          Nara City is famous for its large deer population.
                          There's a 東栄堂 (maybe "Toei-do") sign in the photo.
                          I Googled 東栄堂 in Nara City and found the following location:
                          https://maps.app.goo.gl/R3F11dzv1sbZhSjZA
                          Unfortunately, it appears that 東栄堂 has closed, and the sign is no longer there.

                              @tss_0101 @Natasha_Jay Thanks a lot for your confirmation. I traveled to Japan back in the Nineties, and learnt about the deer while visiting Nara. Haven't seen anything similar anywhere else, so the posted picture immediately called 'Nara'.
