Fun fact to keep you awake tonight: Just had a chat with an atmospheric chemist and the best comparison she could come up with for the pollution that would result from burning up 1 million "AI datacenter" satellites in Earth's atmosphere is a nuclear war.

@sundogplanets @paul_ipv6 I really don't believe this stupid plan is ever going to happen.
Even if they can launch 1000 sats a week, it'll take 20 years (if none fall down). And that's not even taking into consideration the resources needed to build them.
It's more Elon bluster, and just a way for him to get money out of gullible investors. Think Theranos.
There is (unfortunately) plenty of credible schemes to fight.
@derickr @sundogplanets @paul_ipv6 But they will probably still launch hundreds of rockets. They need to, to pass the time until they have come up with next big thing to keep investors amused. Only then can they abandon their current hype carrier…
-
@derickr @sundogplanets @paul_ipv6 That he is plotting it at all means he needs to be stopped. Halted. It's at least worth talking to reps about. What of Elon fails but he inspires a smarter, more efficient psycho that goes for it. If this is something they are threatening then it's something we should be trying to prevent.
@smutmag @derickr @sundogplanets
the past also argues that he's good at scamming government funds from legit projects and science for his scams. we need to be sure our taxes aren't misused.

@paul_ipv6 @derickr @sundogplanets I'm talking strictly about what should be done when/if we get our country back, and through legislation. Something like the "Don't kill the earth with your horseshit hobbies" bill. I don't want trump doing anything about anything except marching into prison. Which is also what Elon should do if the people ever have representation again.

Well, nuclear winter is one way to combat global warming...

@sundogplanets finally, the plot of Fallout
-
Why can't we have the future where we are led by scientists and not the stupidest assholes?
-
AiWinter is the secret solution to the "Cooking to death" climate collapse.
See? Broligarchs were right when they said AI fill fix #climatecollapse
@n_dimension @paul_ipv6 @sundogplanets So like, the result of this isn't a cooled down earth but a slightly less hot earth that's muggy as fuck and tastes like methamphetamine smoke, copper, and burning tires and looks like mars but with "fog".
Think Constantine and those hell scenes.
Better than totally melted I guess.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social Well, they are rockets so that makes sense.
Is the primary concern with nuclear pollution not the radioactive contaminants? Do satellites acquired induced radioactivity over their useful life on top of that?

@sundogplanets yep, that helps. 🤨

@peterjriley2024 I am a co-author on that...

@lispi314 This is purely looking at soot and particulates/aerosols, not radioactivity

@sundogplanets Had a recent chat with someone I know who knows a fair bit about this stuff. Their main points - "one of the dumbest ideas the AI bros have ever come up with," and that cooling these things would present huge challenges due to there being no conduction in the vacuum of space. "Heat budgeting is one of the most difficult parts of spacecraft design." Truly stupid times we live in.

@sundogplanets wait! Wait!
Is this secretly a geo-engineering plan to reduce global temperatures by Stratospheric Aerosol Injection?!
Have we all been horribly wrong about Elon all this time?
/s

sadly, "fix" in the veterinary sense of the word...
@paul_ipv6 @n_dimension @sundogplanets
Or, put it to rest. 🥴

@sundogplanets what happens, when they stay at a Lagrange point and are dumped on the moon at the end of their lifetime? Would the created dust cause problems?

@sundogplanets well, that’s comforting…
…horrifying…I meant to say horrifying!
WTAF are they thinking?!
-
talking about it in terms like this is how we'll get the press and public more aware. hopefully before it's too late.
@paul_ipv6 @sundogplanets It doesn't work with global warming. Why should it work this time?
That's why scientists drink.

@Edelruth @paul_ipv6 @n_dimension @sundogplanets Like... a 9mm infantry first aid kit.
