    Immigration services across the West have been cruel for a very long time¹, but just not to people who look like this or come from here.

        @davidnjoku I’m afraid I have absolutely no sympathy for this woman. The opening paragraph is her saying she knew it was happening but didn’t think it would happen to her.

        @Talia @davidnjoku you know the US is invading sovereign countries but you don’t think it will happen to you. We all “know” a lot of things that we don’t let change our actions.

                @rob it's important to analyze this though. Unadressed internalized racism is part of the reason why there hasn't been this level of resistance sooner, part of the reason ehy Trump got this level of support. We all have been raised in a racist society.

                  @davidnjoku Reminds me of 2022, when the Tories, in the midst of a massive anti-refugee crusade, were suddenly confronted with Ukrainian refugees. Since they obviously couldn't turn them away, but at the same time didn't want to offend their right-wing voters after having succesfully campaigned on this racist shit, some genius came up with the idea of selling it with the "they look like us" argument. 🙄

                    @Talia But we all know, and we've all always known, but we still travel to these countries. I don't have white privilege, but I still go to countries like America or the UAE, expecting to be treated differently cos I'm not from a developing country.

                    @davidnjoku
                    Well, US immigration was odd 30 years ago, and 9/11 was about the point when the US become oppressive enough that it was with very a deep consideration of you really want to visit in person.

                    Now it's obviously an unsafe place to travel, and only because it's an "ally" it has avoided official travel advisories in Europe. Despite that there have been informal government comments that are surprising similar to what would be said on case of such travel advisories.

                      @Talia @davidnjoku but they still buy our products and allow our military into thier lands. When we send a deranged representative you smile and nod to thier face so they come back and say how everyone loves and respects them. Like I said, you know we are aggressors that take whatever we want but you think it won’t happen to you.

                        This happens because ICE goons get a "bounty" for each body they snatch.

                        And they have quotas to fill.

                        I guess they're getting in trouble for not reaching the quota, but never for kidnapping the "wrong" people.
