Let's be honest, the thing that we find appalling about this story of a middle-aged white British woman being locked up for weeks by ICE isn't the fact that she was locked up; it's that it can happen to a white middle-aged British woman.

Immigration services across the West have been cruel for a very long time¹, but just not to people who look like this or come from here.

¹ ICE has got much worse recently@davidnjoku I’m afraid I have absolutely no sympathy for this woman. The opening paragraph is her saying she knew it was happening but didn’t think it would happen to her.

That's what makes her a good example though, because unfortunately this kind of egoistic hubris is the basic mindset of a lot of people usually not giving a damn about oppression of minorities. Sadly for a lot of people things only matter when they personally are being affected, or someone they personally know and really care about. Or when they learn it *could* affect them.

@Sirablopp That's a fair point.

@Talia But we all know, and we've all always known, but we still travel to these countries. I don't have white privilege, but I still go to countries like America or the UAE, expecting to be treated differently cos I'm not from a developing country.

¹ ICE has got much worse recently@davidnjoku @georgebaily I remember visiting NYC in late Sept 2001 and every single brown person on the plane being lined up for additional scrutiny, while I, the sole white face on the flight, was waved through. Gave me the ick in a big way.

@davidnjoku @Talia lot of straight privilege to go to the UAE too. I never would, though I'm not visibly LGBTQ because I happen to have married a man, the fact it's illegal to be anything other than straight... Yeah, no.

@noodlemaz @davidnjoku women are discriminated against in the Middle East too. I would not think of these countries as obviously safe destinations either
Also, there’s no “we” here. Lots of people are choosing not to travel to the US or take holidays in Dubai for these reasons

¹ ICE has got much worse recently@davidnjoku Yes it is. However this is (another) example that we should not allow this at all. If it can happen to others, it can happen to you and the ones you love. Maybe not today, but tomorrow. Resist the beginnings!

@Sirablopp @Talia @davidnjoku This is why I rub my hands for when the World Cup starts. Not that I gave singular damn about football nowadays. It’s waiting for the first incidents to happen to white football fans traveling to the US.
If by now you’re still going to that shithole, you are going there with the entitled mindset that the cruelty of ICE and other “law” enforcements does not apply to you. -

This happens because ICE goons get a "bounty" for each body they snatch.
