This is the document, Trump does not want you to see.

In 1916, under President Woodrow Wilson, the United States signed the purchase of the Virgin Islands from Denmark, in a convention in which the United States recognised Denmark's right to the whole of Greenland.

Danish MP's of The Defence Committee will convene in the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility at 18:00 to discuss the defence of Greenland.

Trump will be very happy for us to see this. He's a rogue actor, interested only in making himself look like a tough guy who isn't bound by laws or treaties. The more laws he breaks, the bigger he thinks he looks.

@randahl You say that as if "laws" and "treaties" have some sort of effect on the current Administration. As was clearly stated in "The Art of the Deal", Donald Trump has *always* broken his contracts. He *recommended* that you get subcontractors to start the work, and once they've invested their labor and materials sufficiently, you simply break the contract and re-negotiate the deal. That's his "Art". Just like the Scorpion in the tale, we knew what he was before we took him on our backs.

@randahl The document might have meaning if Trump were held to the law, but he's not. It's just a piece of paper.

@randahl What form did the "authorization" given by the USG for Lansing's "declaration" take, and does it have the force of law? I'll assume for the purposes of discussion that "will not object" means "will not ever object".

@randahl @benroyce US threatened to take the islands by force if Denmark would not sell them. They were convinced that Germany would seize them and Denmark wouldn’t be able to defend them. Same argument they’re using with Greenland.

@randahl Is that like how Ukraine was always going to be protected if they gave up their nuclear arms? Is it like that?

That worked out well, didn't it.

@randahl There's an easy spin for trump et al to explain their ignoring the document:

Quote: United States of America will not object to the Danish Government extending their political and economic interests to the whole of Greenland.

They'll just say Denmark has failed in extending their political and economic interests to the whole of Greenland and therefore it's down to the good ol' us of a to do the job for Greenland on Denmark's behalf. Simples!

then the us would have just taken the virgin islands by force

@benroyce @utf_7 @randahl They actually threatened to do just that. Denmark was forced to sell, the US feared Germany would seize the islands and Denmark wouldn’t be able to defend them. Exactly the same argument Stephen Miller (Trump puppetmaster) is making today.

@randahl Denmark/Greenland should realize that this paper is worthless. Only strength and defiant escalation will work (IMHO). End the US base lease immediately, ask / force them to leave, deploy Danish or NATO troops to Greenland. Only by making it super expensive and risking loss of US troops will TACO back down. All just my opinion. You can't negotiate with him because he's not following any rules, just what's good for him and his cronies.
