@joby as corollary.. anyone coding a modal dialog with an option "Maybe later" can go to hell....

    @dplattsf @joby
I’d be okay with a “remind me later” ONLY IF always paired with a “dismiss forever” option.

@joby not the programmers, sales and growth hackers forcing it on the rest of marketing and development 🫠

@bolderbekah You're not wrong, but it ultimately takes two to tango. I feel like a lot of programmers just utterly divorce themselves from the consequences of their work. Honestly a lot of people in general do that, because unethical jobs often pay well.

Like I could probably double or triple my salary by getting a job at our local national labs or some defense contractor, but ... I like how working on my silly little university websites means the code I write will never kill anybody. That's like one of my number one job perks.

@neverbeaten @dplattsf Right? I'd accept three options, as long as one of them is "leave me alone forever"

@neverbeaten @joby or for me, I will probably keep coming to your site and then immediately leaving with a great feeling of resentment until I remember to tell Kagi to never show me your stupid fucking site in search results again. 😈

@neverbeaten Yeah. Granted I'm a weird nerd, but I actually do have every single login I use behind unique email addresses. I bought a lifetime subscription to Proton Pass a long time ago, and it integrates an email alias feature from SimpleLogin. So when I'm making a new account it just pops up a little alias generator right there. Very convenient.

SimpleLogin even lets you use your own domain name, so I'm not completely hosed if they go under or enshittify someday.

@joby Don't blame the programmers. I'm sure it's the sales team / executive suite / etc. who insist they do these things.
My own pet peave when I need to use Windows (which I avoid when possible) is that any time Windows brings up something in the browser, it will be in Edge ignoring my stated preference to use Firefox.
There are extensions (for #Firefox at least) that can block those annoying "Log in with Google" popups eg Block Origin.

@alisynthesis @neverbeaten I've also gotten a lot of mileage out of just using uBlock to turn off all javascript except sites I've explicitly allowed it for. That takes care of a huge swath of these kinds of annoyances.

@joby if you told me ten years ago I would consider doing that, I would have laughed. If you told me five years ago, I would have said, "that seems extreme."

I've been using Gmail since 2004. No, Google, you do not need to know my birthday to verify that I'm over 18.

@joby I’ve absolutely avoided interviews with companies or leaders that seemed unethical, and I try to minimize user disruption (whether those users are employees or customers).

I think Google crossed the line a long time ago with rhe chrome pestering, and I know companies are forcing AI into tools where there isn’t demand and not letting people opt out.

                                      * there are some good intentions for PLG & educating users on new features they may not know. Just respect their choice to say no thanks.

@joby maybe we should create a dialogue prompt serving this text that pops up in every code writing application each time it is opened as a helpful reminder to website developers that will help them stop making every wrong choice that exists in the course of their work.
