@yantor3d I'm the same way up here in Seattle. I'd get studded tires, but they're needed so infrequently that I'll just stop riding on these rare days. Tho I am curious to see how well they work. Would still be cautious as I don't trust drivers in such conditions.
The Schwalbe studded tires aren't that good. When the temperature is under -10C the rubber gets hard and you have no grip. The spikes don't help much either. The older version lasted for one season and then the studs would eat themselves through the rubber and make punctures. The later ones are a bit better against that though. I bought Nokian tires instead, much softer rubber and more grip and lasts longer than one season.

@bikenite @cpm @ascentale I do too. In my Boy Scout years, I winter camped in sub-zero (Fahrenheit) temperatures, horribly under-geared, and thus “earned” a BSA Zero Hero honor. I borrowed the term from that experience

cool!

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite I just had a similar poll about your preferred living room temperature: https://mastodon.de/@blechterror/115990329860457729 (unfortunately the °F Fahrenheit poll did not receive much participation) 🥺

@yantor3d @ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite @dgodon that's am excellent point about drivers, which probably saved me a painful experiment

-18C, but not by choice. Only if I have errands I have to do. Living in a small town helps with that. -13.33C is my true limit where it becomes too uncomfortable. -7.77C if I don't have warming socks or ski goggles. On the other end of the temperature 40C in a dry climate is my limit. 35C in a humid climate.

On road, freezing gives me pause for thought, but if there's low risk of ice I'll be out. My record is a feeble minus 8C earlier this winter, wind chill minus 14C. Double base-layer! #BikeNite -

I used to ride down to -10C°, but my lungs and my knees, all in their eighth decade, will no longer allow me to do that.

#bikeniteA3: I'm using something called "Lungplus" for biking in cold weather. This has been a game changer for me having asthma. Now I can even do snow showeling without problems.
For the knees I use extra padding under my pants for the front of the knees to be able to bike below -5°C down to -35°C when my bike gives up the ghost. Three layers everywhere and a ski-mask for the face. Helmet with high-vis rain cover on top. Have tried bar-mitts too.
-
@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite If I could just keep my damn toes warm, I feel like there is no lower limit to temp. Hands are good, head is good, face is good, core gets too hot actually, but I cannot keep my toes warm. #BikeNite
@rowmyboat @ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite That's my biggest problem, too. So long as my hands, feet, and ears are warm, I'll be fine. Maybe even sweat a bit!
My usual cold weather work commute outfit is just warm socks, my usual pants, an undershirt, button up shirt, wool vest, gloves, and a wool cycling cap with ear covers. Only around 20F the wind starts to seep into my gloves.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham@universeodon.com @bikenite A3. For me my minimum is around -25°F/-30°C. It doesn't get below that here very often. I like how the snow firms up below 15°F/-10°F so with studded tires it gets easier to grip onto than melty slop around freezing. #bikenite

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3. It hardly ever drops to freezing here, and generally always gets upto 10/50. Since I don’t have to bike anywhere, I just wait a while. #BikeNite

Yes, when you are retired, you can always wait out the worst of the weather. The day I rode at -11F and -31F windchill, it was early in the afternoon. At daybreak it was -22F and -50F windchill. So I waited for the sun to warm things and the winds to diminish.
That was the day of the general strike and protest in Minneapolis (80 miles from here) and the protesters were out longer than me in that weather, a HUGE number of very brave folks. -
@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3. I answered "Freezing" only because that's the lowest I've been exposed to yet. Not sure how it would feel to ride in 0F. #BikeNite
@meganL Risk of frostbite at zero and sub zero F.
It feels cold. I hate it. You lose me quickly once the Celciuses vanish.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite The coldest I've biked is 14 feels like 6 which was in January here in Atlanta. I was starting to suffer a bit for sure when it was that cold but luckily it doesn't get down that cold very often around here. I think if it was regularly that cold or colder I'd need some more winter gear to make it bearable.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3 #BikeNite I have not (yet) had the opportunity to bike at 0F, but I've been out in 4F, and 32F is not even worth a second thought (to me). I quit growing a winter beard after covid (for mask use) but I own a few balaclavas and scarves.

Reading that and thinking that's not cold at all then remembering, Atlanta, that's F not C, anything below 32 is below freezing.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3. Somewhere between 0F & 32F. I’d probably be willing to go below 0F, but we thankfully rarely get close to that. I’ll definitely ride down to 15F to get to work/school, but probably not for a fun ride. For fun rides? Around 32F. #BikeNite
