I am SO TIRED of people telling me what to think.
-
I wake up to comments and emails from dudes explaining to me *with absolute certainty* why I'm wrong on Linux, Commodore, or something else.
I go to the store to buy parts for servers or small projects, and I'm accosted by dudes who explain to me what tools or equipment I *should* be using.
In meetings where I present technical information, the Chief Dudebro Officer tells me to "thank the guys that wrote this".
And on this site, EVERY POST I MAKE, are dudes explaining things I already know.
@vkc Kinda feels like someone who owns linuxmom.net maybe, just maybe, has a solid grasp of Linux.

"Explains" is in my literal job title. Yet I'm explained-to every minute of every day.
Hundreds of comments a day assuming I don't know how tech works. Hundreds of comments from randos telling me how I should feel about my city being under paramilitary occupation.
Dudes: SHUT UP
@vkc keep moving linux forward, really respect and love your work and I have learned a lot from it

Even socially, I am getting very tired of those people who's responses all begin with 'what you should do is...'
Nah. I was 'unloading', not 'seeking advice'.

"Why aren't more women in tech?"
Look in the fucking mirror, dudes.
I don't want your platitudes, gentlemen. I want you to take every "keep fighting the good fight", ball it up into a fist, and swing it at a man who's explaining tech to a woman who's spent her ENTIRE LIFE working with it.
I was never here to "fight a good fight". That's your job.

@vkc maybe they miss their mommies, want someone to pat them on the head and say "good boy!"

@vkc Those dudes suck. You rock. The internet is a better place with you around.
Sending all the positive vibes I can. -

@vkc just a note to say thanks for your helpful guides. Yesterday, you taught me how to use Rsync to backup my homelab files. Sorry about these other dudes that don't seem to get it, but I personally default to your vids as I navigate the linuxverse and wish there were more like you doing this. Keep it up!

@vkc We boast ourselves thinking we're a better community than others.
No. No we're not.

@vkc WELL AKSHULLY
@gedvondur @vkc No! don't do that. it's not funny. it never was. you just add noise and make the OP angrier.

@vkc So sorry. It’s hard to escape that Y chromosome.

@annsiobhandoyle no it's not. Dudes just need to do better. And it starts with calling out other dudes, not apologizing to women

@vkc A good friend of mine - and a phenomenal software engineer - just started grad school to switch to a career outside of tech. Due in large part to the exact type of thing you're describing.
I really hate to see it, but I also can't bring myself to tell her to "just stick it out." But it is our loss as an industry.
We - meaning men, especially us CIS white guys - need to be proactive in fighting this.

@vkc I am not a woman, so I can't fully relate, but in my experience in 2/3 of the organizations, being arrogant gets you promoted. Not all organizations are like that thankfully, but it is prevalent in tech.
Talking like everyone is dumber than you is how they get credits. (I suffocate in those environments.)

@vkc Fighting patriarchy and gender norms is not an easy task even for a man, exceptionally when he has some feminine characteristics.
Anyway, I try to be solidare and I enjoy your lessons.
