I *knew* I should have looked up the source on this one! But I was lazy. *facepalm*
@IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev it may be AI but it's still good advice so I redrew it.

@IngridHbn @artcollisions @nev what I have learned from this is that I'm considerably better at drawing cartoon snails than I am at drawing human hands

@afewbugs Question: in the third frame, what's the grey stuff below the shell? Is it supposed to be leftover slime on the ground, or do they retract their head and leave some of their body outside? (It's been a long time since I saw a big snail, and I can't remember what they do. For little snails, I seem to recall that they sometimes fall over after they retract their body.)

@webhat @IngridHbn@mastodon.online apparently this is AI slop and not even correct.
https://flipping.rocks/@nev/116131408308064605@ninafelwitch thanks for letting me know

@nuwagaba2 By rerreating into their shells? No, because that is their evolved defence. By being grabbed like this, no unless maybe the snail is on glass or other super smooth man made surface. But the foot of the snail is not a suction cup but more like a sticky pad that is strong enough to hold but is not a glue.
I hope this helps.
@InkySchwartz
It has indeed helped. Thanks for the knowledge and the enlightment. For how long have you been a scientist? -
@IngridHbn NO! This is not accurate information, this is AI SLOP!

@IngridHbn Thank you for sharing this! I have pet giant African landsnails and the way I explain it is the shell is hard, like your fingernails, but it would hurt if someone picked you up by your fingernails too because they're connected to delicate tissue. I'd also add that sometimes touching the shell isn't enough - some of my snails are more cautious than others and retract immediately, whereas with some of the more bold ones you have to (gently!) tap repeatedly. Also they're less likely to go back in if they're eating something they like. It really does show that even creatures as simple as snails have distinct personalities and preferences
@afewbugs this is ai slop.

@csgraves @nev pointed that out downthread. The advice is still correct though so i redrew it https://social.coop/@afewbugs/116131701361234718

It has indeed helped. Thanks for the knowledge and the enlightment. For how long have you been a scientist?@nuwagaba2 I'm a geography professor but not a biologist or ecologist. But I have been encouraged over my life to pay attention to the natural world around me. So I read, and listen, and try to ask good questions. And I use iNaturalist to help me understand the world around me.
Also, I sometimes paticipate in citizen science projects.

@kupac @IngridHbn As another biologist, I can tell you that most of the snails that appear on my terrace are not going to be there long after I have noticed them. How I pick them up is the least of their worries.
@etp @kupac @IngridHbn I was thinking this. I've yeeted snails down the garden and they just crawl back to the tasty begonias

I respect all forms of life, but not equally. I'm looking at you, nettles, mosquitoes and giant Spanish slugs!
@IngridHbn -
@Nexy it's not true, it's AI slop
@quasiabsolut the info too? Man, is difficult to be on internet these days.
Still sounds a more gentle way to but

@IngridHbn@kupac @etp @IngridHbn ow, but I love nettles, good tea and soup, great fibers, and 2 butterflies live only on nettles.
