@nuwagaba2 @kupac Retracting quickly? So they can be completely protected by the shell.

As a biologist, I call bullshit. The anatomy is correct, but I've never seen a snail getting injured by lifting it off the ground. It's not like a suction pad. The only place where it *might* happen is a very smooth, artificial surface, like a window. But there, you'll feel the resistance, and won't rip it off. Also, usually they retreat quite fast when in danger, you don't need half a minute for that.

@kupac @IngridHbn As another biologist, I can tell you that most of the snails that appear on my terrace are not going to be there long after I have noticed them. How I pick them up is the least of their worries.

@nuwagaba2 By rerreating into their shells? No, because that is their evolved defence. By being grabbed like this, no unless maybe the snail is on glass or other super smooth man made surface. But the foot of the snail is not a suction cup but more like a sticky pad that is strong enough to hold but is not a glue.

                        I hope this helps.

@afewbugs Question: in the third frame, what's the grey stuff below the shell? Is it supposed to be leftover slime on the ground, or do they retract their head and leave some of their body outside? (It's been a long time since I saw a big snail, and I can't remember what they do. For little snails, I seem to recall that they sometimes fall over after they retract their body.)

@IngridHbn Thank you for sharing this! I have pet giant African landsnails and the way I explain it is the shell is hard, like your fingernails, but it would hurt if someone picked you up by your fingernails too because they're connected to delicate tissue. I'd also add that sometimes touching the shell isn't enough - some of my snails are more cautious than others and retract immediately, whereas with some of the more bold ones you have to (gently!) tap repeatedly. Also they're less likely to go back in if they're eating something they like. It really does show that even creatures as simple as snails have distinct personalities and preferences
