Someone posted a while ago that shitty alttexts are better than none and shouldn't be critisized. I disagree.
Whenever I see a post with pictures, I look to the bottom right. If there's no 'ALT', I don't even bother to read the post.
But if there is the 'ALT' symbol, I'd like to trust that there is actually a comprehensible description behind. Not a repetition of the toot, not an URL, not some 'easteregg joke'.
In fact, I feel fooled if someone tries to sell gibberish as alttext.

#alttextA comprehensive alttext doesn't have to be long. I'd accept "a tree", if this is all someone needs to understand in the context of the toot.
But yesterday I read an "alttext" from a mutual, probably AI generated, describing a scene exhaustively while missing the point of just naming the people shown (it said something like "several well-known persons" without naming them).
Use AI if you need to. But please, please read the fcking result and don't just copypaste.
