people are miserable. This was had been coming for a while, and literally noone anywhere in the country supports it. War fatigue, sky rocketing living costs, means Abiy won't enjoy the support he did way back in 2020.
The Continent produced this almost a year ago, and gives an idea how locals were dreading the leadup. As you can see, people have been waiting for the inevitable for a long while now.

@hszakher Eritrea's fallout with Ethiopia is rooted in disagreements with how the previous war ended. Eritrea was unhappy with peace talks and wanted a military solution. Ethiopia also felt undermined, when a number of militia fighters formerly allied with the Ethiopian government, traveled to Eritrea and received training and weapons, without permission from Addis Ababa. Eritrea has long been allied with Egypt in Sudan, pitting it against Ethiopia and the UAE.
But with the powers in the EU fatigued and preoccupied with a renegade US President and what they are deeming to be the collapse of the global order...and with regional powers like Turkey, Egypt, UAE and KSA...all believed to be invested in one horse of another...there is no one with real leverage who would take the time to force the factions into dialogue.
The AU, which hasn't been able to do anything to bring peace to Sudan, is a paper tiger here.
Worrying developments in Tigray.
None of the factions have officially commented, and no open declaration of war has been made as of yet. A big change from the war of 2020-2022, Eritrean forces, who were allied with the Ethiopian army and committed numerous war crimes across Tigray, are now allied with Tigrayan forces against the Ethiopian army. Eritrea is suspected of providing support for Ethiopian rebels.
Yesterday, the African Union issued a statement calling for restraint.
On Thursday, intense fighting between Ethiopian government forces & Tigrayan rebels broke out.
A brutal civil war between these factions killed hundreds of thousands from 2020 to 2022. Implementing a ceasefire agreed to in November 2022 has been complex. It has led to a breakdown in relations and now outright clashes.
The issue this time...the war could coalesce with the one in Sudan, with Tigrayan forces allied with the Sudanese government, and Ethiopia with the RSF.
