  • Predictions for the future of accessibility by @eric, I sadly agree with
    stephaniewalter@front-end.socialS stephaniewalter@front-end.social

And on a personal note: accessibility also deserves better than an army of lawyers, who put efforts into finding loopholes so that your products don't have to comply with EAA (European Accessibility Act). Let's stop this nonsense, and, put budget into training developers, designers, project managers, even stakeholders.

Doesn't mean I like them, but, sadly, I also can't disagree.
I’m already seeing the grifters circling, selling fake fixes and performative compliance. Just like with cookies.
Accessibility deserves better than checkbox contracts and automated snake oil.

@adhd_coffee I need this as a shirt or badge. Also, I really try to keep what they were saying in my short term memory (haha the delusion) and try to bring them back to it after my own sidequest. But, they are still often, annoyed.

  • I've seen a reel from a lady who said that, as an adult woman in her 30s, she's exhausted from trying to get diagnosed for autism/ ADHD and none takes her seriously.
    stephaniewalter@front-end.socialS stephaniewalter@front-end.social

Bottom line: we should stop asking for a diagnosis to give people accommodations!
If someone tells you they need to use a noise cancelling headset to focus, let them. If someone tells you they need some quiet time in the middle of the day, let them.

I've seen a reel from a lady who said that, as an adult woman in her 30s, she's exhausted from trying to get diagnosed for autism/ ADHD and none takes her seriously. She now decided to not get diagnosed and to get treatment for the all her comorbidities instead.
    It's the sad truth. 😔

Getting diagnosed is a lot of energy and a privilege: time, money, finding doctors who won't go "you don't obsess over trains you are autistic" (wishing I made that up but it's a quote from a lady I know) and take you seriously.

@raphaelmorgan @shininghero same here the ones I saw were not created for accessibility but more like "this road is dangerous we needs cars to slow down so let's raise some speed bumps that will also act as crosswalk areas for pedestrians".
    Still, they do the job

@koneko interesting solution indeed. I guess this would have been harder to put in place in the 70s when the term was created, since those were created by activists, who were illegally destroying the pavement to make it more accessible. But yeah, it's a good example of "if we think accessibility upfront we can do amazing things for everyone, if we retrofit we kind of do the minimum viable thing".

A more modern example would be captions in videos: they are a feature designed for deaf and hard of hearing people, but also benefits people with ADHD and auditory processing disorder, people who want to listen to a video without sound for various reasons, etc.

When we design for disabilities, we make things better for everyone. This is called the Curb-Cut Effect. The term was coined by disability students and activists in the 70s, who added curb cuts to the Berkeley sidewalks to make access easier for those in wheelchairs. They discovered those also helped people with strollers, using trolleys for deliveries, etc.
