@xtaldave and frankly, we’re in this situation because everyone he’s surrounded by, including the Republican Party, agree with him

He knows it’s named “president”, but he thinks the definition is “a ruler with total power over a country”, so of course he thinks the leader of a foreign country could order an independent organization to do what he wants.

Jeff Bezos is saying the quiet part out loud.@LorenzoBonomelli @terminaltilt Politicians in several countries have been trying to pass laws to force companies to put backdoors in encryption. Last year the UK hit Apple with a gag order and an order to remove Advanced Data Protection in the UK. The EU is constantly fighting with chat control. I think the chat control one is trying to force it at the OS level, which would be nearly impossible to enforce for everyone if the users still control the hardware. If we all move to hosted PCs, I can’t imagine privacy will be possible for too long.
Quickly searched links (I only have a short break to respond):

Jeff Bezos is saying the quiet part out loud.@LorenzoBonomelli @terminaltilt will you still like it if they pass laws that enforce on-device scanning of all data on the internet?
