people might joke but this is where the IT industry is headed and nobody is safe. it doesn't matter if you are good or bad, you are just another commodity. just look at how many engineering jobs were cut in the past 18 months. Oracle is now reporting it will cut 30k jobs. there is no regulation in place and by the time our politicians wake up there will be nothing left. once it was a thriving industry and now it is on the brink of collapse. the change is real whether you like it or not

This chart shows the total number of Stack Overflow questions asked each month. This chart shows the total number of Stack Overflow questions asked each month. As you can see, AI summaries in Google and AI coding tools have nearly killed the site. It is only a matter of time before the site shuts down completely. The golden age of independent news, blogs, forums, and specialized sites like Stack Overflow is over. Whether this is good or bad, only time will tell. Personally, I think we are now restricting all internet traffic to just a few Gen AI apps https://data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1926661#graph

TIL, an open source internet search engine called MarginaliaSearch exists.TIL, an open source internet search engine called MarginaliaSearch exists. It mainly for text-oriented websites, specifically indexing the 'small, old, and weird' web. You can even run it on your own server if you have 32GiB of RAM and plenty of fast SSD space for the index. This is perfect for those seeking an alt search engine, but more importantly, it teaches you how to build a search system and manage its dataset. It’s a fantastic CS learning experience to satisfy your itch.

In 1991, a uni student from Finland started a "hobby" project because he couldn't afford to pay expensive Unix license that could run on a commodity hardware. In 1991, a uni student from Finland started a "hobby" project because he couldn't afford to pay expensive Unix license that could run on a commodity hardware. At the time, he told on the mailing list that his project wouldn't be anything "big or professional."
It turned out that he was totally wrong.

They finally settle on Debian Stable or Mint because they realize they no longer have the "mental bandwidth" to spend 6 hours configuring stuff or fix broken systems just to check their email or watch Netflix.
