I feel your pain. I had the same research and decision making process. I decided to go with a pixel 4 and GrapheneOS back then and am still happily using it. Works great. Unfortunately it's entirely outdated now and doesn't receive any security updates anymore. Hardware and software is fine though. And even though I hate Google and I hate using Google hardware, I have to admit the hardware quality couldn't be much better. Longevity is always limited by software support in the end.
I struggle to decide to buy a new phone just because of security, but given politics at the moment I should probably go ahead and buy a newer pixel. I hate giving Google money, but I was not convinced by the hardware quality of the fair phones unfortunately and have been given many negative user experiences/reviews. (Back then. Maybe they improved by now. idk. But I'm not willing to find out the hard way.)
