The young man looked a bit deranged. Not bad, though, with his bronze complexion.
- You must be freezing. Come in!
The old lady pulled him inside,
- I am… I am… out of…
- Here. Put this on. It’s from my son. Why on earth are you walking outside just in your underwear?
He accepted the clothes and the cup of tea she offered him. But he wouldn’t say his name nor where he came from.
- I am out of – where is this?
- It’s my house. You’re safe here, if that’s your concern. Even if I wonder what you’re doing here. Do you want to call somenone?
He shook his head. She must be crazy, she thought. Rupert would have called the police or at least an ambulance. But she felt, this guy was harmless. And obviously in need of help.
The door bell rang.
- Stay here, she said.
There was another man outside. A tall one, pretty corpulent, with a long white beard. He wore a black coat and a black hat.
- Good evening, madam! I am sorry for disturbing you, especially on Christmas evening, but I am desperately looking for my, um, assistant. A young man.
- Assistant?
- Ho, well, yes, the stranger replied with a remarkably deep voice.
- Why do you think he might have come here, she asked.
- Well, there are not so many settlements around here, madam.
- Exactly. And that’s why it’s not very likely that he would appear in this place – of all things.
- You are most probably right, the old man said and wanted to turn around.
- But if you describe him, I can keep my eyes open for you. How does he look like?
- Well, that’s a bit peculiar. He has bronze or copper-like skin and is not wearing clothes… well…
- Are you talking of an illegal immigrant, sir?
- By all means, no! But he’s, um…
He was thinking what to say. Just like Rupert, when he’d arrived late at home.
- I’m listening.
- Well, to be honest, he’s no man at all. He’s a robot.
- Mister, I might be old, but I’m not stupid. Don’t tell me lies or I’ll call the authorities!
- No, ma’am, please. It’s the truth. He looks very human and I need him for – delivering things, you know.
- Things.
- Yes. Every kind of things.
- Shouldn’t you have come with a vehicle then?
- Ho, yes, but… I parked it over there, behind the trees.
- I am sorry, but I can’t help you. I’m afraid you have to buy yourself another assistant.
- Alright, nevertheless thank you. A have a merry Christmas! He lifted up his head and left.
She closed the door and returned to the living-room. Her guest hadn’t moved the slightest bit.
- A robot, right? You know how to use this?
She handed him a broom.
- I am… out of…
