@mattblaze He can't "nationalize" elections, for the reasons you give, but I wouldn't call it "meaningless blather" either. It fits into and reinforces what he *is* doing to disrupt elections in his favor, not by preventing them, but by intimidating voters and officials in key places. We have plenty of historic examples of voter suppression and bias in running polls, and he's already been able to shift other behavior in some states (and universities) via "orders" that shouldn't have legal force.

No, Trump does not have the legal authority or the practical ability to “nationalize” US elections, for all the same reasons he also didn’t when he issued an executive order a few months ago abolishing mail in voting. -
Most deaths ICE is responsible for happen away from cameras. Most deaths ICE is responsible for happen away from cameras. Earlier this month, just outside of Philadelphia, Parady La, a 46-year-old Cambodian refugee, died in ICE custody about 48 hours after his arrest in Upper Darby: https://www.audacy.com/kywnewsradio/news/local/ice-detainee-dies-at-philly-hospital-after-drug-withdrawal
His family says he needed medical treatment for drug withdrawal, and that La had told them that, but Narcan, the treatment ICE says they gave him repeatedly, is instead for overdose, and can worsen withdrawal symptoms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naloxone

"A President who openly admits his foreign policy is driven by personal grievances over awards he didn’t receive is not fit for office."A President who openly admits his foreign policy is driven by personal grievances over awards he didn’t receive is not fit for office. A President who threatens to invade NATO allies and won’t rule out military force against them is a danger to global stability… These aren’t controversial statements. They’re obvious. Everyone knows it. But none of the political elite want to act." https://www.techdirt.com/2026/01/20/everyone-knows-our-mad-kings-greenland-obsession-is-insane-why-wont-congress-stop-it/
Congress can stop this now, by impeachment and removal. We need to make them do it. #USPol

Historians will, I predict, regard the current situation as the American Civil War II.@Ulmo @heidilifeldman I highly doubt elections will be canceled. Most authoritarian regimes still hold them, to make themselves look more legitimate, but engage in major suppression of voters and/or candidates to force the result they want. We've certainly seen that in our own country's history (like before the 1965 Voting Rights Act, now in the process of being dismantled).
I worry that a lot of folks are thinking "well, elections haven't been canceled, so it can't be too bad". Yes it can be.

Condé Nast forgot to renew the trademark for Gourmet and so a group of journalists grabbed it and are relaunching the food magazine as a worker-owned co-op.@tripleman (And they're now filled in, with all the renewals I could find for issues up to 1964. From that point onward, copyrights automatically renew even if nobody files an application.) Here's what I found: https://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/cinfo/gourmet

Condé Nast forgot to renew the trademark for Gourmet and so a group of journalists grabbed it and are relaunching the food magazine as a worker-owned co-op.@tripleman That's right. There's a gap of 12 years or so, though, where they appear not to have renewed issue copyrights (as well as a few 1-month omissions elsewhere). There are some renewals for individual contributions as well (including some in that 12-year gap); I'm working on filling those in.

Condé Nast forgot to renew the trademark for Gourmet and so a group of journalists grabbed it and are relaunching the food magazine as a worker-owned co-op.@tripleman @kottke Hmmm... on a quick spot-check it looks like not all of the oldest issues have copyright renewals Some do, but the very first one appears not to, and it looks like there were later renewal gaps as well. I might need to add more to my rights information page: https://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/cinfo/gourmet
