It's strange, I remember being told the Beatles broke up by my father. I can even remember the expression he used!
I heard it at from other kids at kindergarten recess. I didn't know what "Beatles" or "broke up" meant, but I could tell it was supposed to be important (I'd already memorised the answer "Bobby Orr" if anyone asked me my favourite hockey player).
Those kids must have heard it from older siblings.
