Are you interested in testing your USB cables?

I see some minor problems in my post, but after I struggled with the Hugo-installation so much today, the fix has to wait a few days.

@masek I think it can be even worse. Everything can report green on a tester like that but the quality of the shielding in the cable may make it so you dont get full speeds on the cable, as some traffic will go to error correcting.

This is why cable testers like this exist : https://www.totalphase.com/products/advanced-cable-tester-v2/ to actually test the speeds provided. Crazy how wild west USB-C is.

@cmansley @masek Note that for $15,000, this tester goes up to 12.8g per data lane. Thunderbolt 4 is around 25g per data lane, and 5 is around 50g per data lane. Even the really good testers have trouble fully testing them.

I can't find a 2nd USB-C cable that works my portable QHD display on host USB-C DP Alt socket.
Only the cable that came with it works for USB-C to USB-C
Any HDMI cable works on both laptops (to regular screen or medium HDMI port on portable display) using a cheap USB-C DP Alt to HDMI socket, even at 4K.

@raymaccarthy A case for the cable tester. Unluckily there are cases of dark arts in the USB universe .

A relative is in Analog Devices: lecturer rubbished USB-C as a terrible spec.

Never mind the cable! If you are buying random phone/tablet/laptop/desktop what does the "host" USB-C port actually support?
Alt Audio?
Alt DisplayPort
Alt ethernet
Which USB 2.x or 3.x speed?
Which power profiles downstream?
What modes (if any) can it charge at with which chargers?
What data/video/other can it supply while charging?

If it's not Linux/Mac/Windows, what format data storage?
