I think, we in Germany should think about closing Ramstein Air Base.

@mina@berlin.social That would require balls and backbone, and we have none of that in the decision-making ranks these days; only sycophants and toadies.
Aren't these the same people who always demand "there shan't be any proscribed ideas"?
Of course, they are just talking like this, when coming up with ideas about being mean to refugees or poor people.

soweit ich weiss sind US-basen weltweit US-hoheitsgebiet, also nur die amis können sie schliessenIt's not that simple: Bases are not part of the USA. The "hosting" country cedes the right to execute law within these bases.
Their status is based on treaties (i.e. contracts) which can be revoked.
Actually, contrary to common belief, this also applies to embassies: Within an embassy, the law of the host country still applies. It's just not enforced.

I think it would be fairly easy to force Ramstein Air Base to close.
- Cut off electricity and water.
- Block the 6000 German employees in the Kaiserslautern area from entering US bases.
- Block the roads. The 16k US folks at Ramstein could hold out for a while on canned food and power from generators.
But I doubt it's sustainable.

Our government has never had any backbone. -

Thankfully, I know some people who have plenty of balls and backbone.
Maybe Rammstein can help.

@mina I guess Germany can't ... also in the Netherlands we have some U.S. bases (with nukes stored), but in fact that's U.S. territory and as dutch we don't have any authority on those spots. I guess it's some legacy from WW2.
(correct me, if i'm wrong)

@mina Artikel 26 Abs. 1 GG?
Viel Glück, in dieser Regierung jemanden zu finden, die/der sich außerhalb von irgend welchen Jubelfeiern und Wahlkampfgeschwafel für das GG einsetzt.

I'm not a fan of this group. They're pretty awful people, especially towards young women.

@billiglarper @mina while it would certainly get attention, a ground based 'siege' of an active air base isn't likely to be particularly effective unless you're also willing and able to stop air traffic in and out...
-
Sure, but sorry, it's in German. From the Federal Parliament.

Actually: I wasn't talking about doing it right now. I meant, bringing it up in the public discourse.
This is, what "think about" means.
It would be a pretty bold diplomatic statement.
