Which #MusicStreaming service are you on?
-
@hpod16 None, just piracy :3
@introvertcatto
️ Arrr, I hear it's back in fashion -
Which #MusicStreaming service are you on? Is anyone else looking at options these days?
@hpod16 Spotify is great and European/Swedish. I evaluated Qobuz because they pay artists roughly 6 times more, but unfortunately it didn't quite work with my WiiM devices yet.

@hpod16 I have struggled a lot to find the right solution for several years. I annotated some thoughts here, but I didn’t have the time to update it. The latest and most important: I switched to #Tidal, and I am quite satisfied so far!
Nevertheless, if you want to experiment with cool, gossipy, and completely decentralized tools, have a look into #Soulseek! I suggest to use Nicotine Plus to access it.

@hpod16 Tidal. It's partially artist owned, and is one of the better paying services for them. Like anything these days, they've had their controversies of course.
Anything actually important, I still have as CD:s.
@Turre I'd quite like to go back to owning music (CDs or records) but there's no space for that in my teeny tiny apartment.
Tidal is the one that's part owned by Beyonce and Jay Z? -
@bashae turns out when you edit a poll, all answers revert to zero. Good to know!
@hpod16 Mm. Sounds like an intentional decision, to prevent users from manipulating the results.

Selfhosted Navidrome with over 300 CDs that I bought over the years (next up: digitizing my collection of LPs)

@hpod16 Navidrome, self-hosted.
I buy music from Qobuz and Bandcamp from time to time. -

@vegai I'm currently on a trial run with Qobuz, but I'm really missing some key features from Spotify.
Also, I learnt that Spotify pays 70% of our contributions towards licensing fees, and that the reason artists get paid so little is because of bad contracts with the big records labels. Is it really fair to blame Spotify then or should we be mad at the big labels?

@hpod16 I use YouTube Music (begrudgingly). But then I also use the `yt-dlp` command line tool to download my playlists and albums and recaps to my phone and laptop!
https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp
So, overall it's an *okay-ish* experience, at least if you've got an adblocker installed for when you do streaming.

@hpod16 I want to go from Spotify to Qubuz. But we use a Family-Account with my Girlfriend, two Teenagers and my Mother This time I'm the only one who wants to change. I'm working on it.

Tidal is the one that's part owned by Beyonce and Jay Z?@hpod16 Yeah Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Daft Punk, Madonna and whatnot:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_(service)#Artist_ownershipNot my favorite artists, but artists anyway
Space tends to be an issue with CD's of course. One option is to rip and then stash away in storage - which is where most of our CD's are too...
-
Which #MusicStreaming service are you on? Is anyone else looking at options these days?
@hpod16 self-hosted via Navidrome server. Still evaluating the compatible clients, but currently I'm rolling with Temp on the phone and Supersonic on desktop

@karlos
So, no music on the go?
Or a collection of MP3 files saved to your device?@hpod16 Yes, tape to MP3 on the smartphone. And an Radio App.
(I lived in Erlangen, when MP3 was invented there) -
@hpod16 Mm. Sounds like an intentional decision, to prevent users from manipulating the results.
@bashae makes total sense! I was surprised you even COULD edit the poll to be honest. Other platforms like LinkedIn wouldn't let you I don't think.

@hpod16 on the go it is digital radio (de tijdloze@vrt). While working, some YouTube dj sets to focus (with adblockers enabled). And occasionally SoundCloud.
-

@hpod16 I listen to radio

@hpod16 None! I buy my music rather than renting it.
-

@hpod16 YT Music, but testing Qobuz. Also, still have Spotify family, but I refuse to use it. Waiting for a DAP arriving within a week, then I will more and more go offline regarding music. Time to buy and rip CD's again. Oh, Bandcamp of course, spend a lot of time there and buying stuff.

My main problem with Spotify are its US ties. Such as contributing to Trump's inauguration fund, running ads for ICE (they've stopped though apparently) and hosting and sponsoring Joe Rogan to pump out insane amount of misinformation.
I'm also hearing AI-generated music is taking over people's playlists (which helps Spotify pay even less loyalties).
