Franz Marc. The Fate of the Animals, 1913.
This is a difficult, tortured painting. Marc died in 1916 and the work was damaged in an actual fire (ironically burned at the end which was supposed to be the only part untouched by the forest fire depicted in the work). His good friend Paul Klee restored the forms from photos but inexplicably used brown tones which in the original would have been bright like the rest.
On the back Marc wrote, "And all being is flaming, suffering."
