@IngridHbn hi Ingrid, in the interest of transparency could you indicate which platform did you use to generate this image or credit the artist? It very much looks like the info graphics some AIs are putting out. It would be much appreciated if AI is properly tagged on mastodon.

@IngridHbn But why do you need to pick up a snail only to put it back in the direction it was heading?

Also the graphic shows the snail being turned around to face the other way.

@lydiaconwell @IngridHbn When it's crossing a street. We sometimes try to help them cross a street, or a path faster. Otherwise they could be run over by a car, or a biker, or a human could step on it.

As a biologist, I call bullshit. The anatomy is correct, but I've never seen a snail getting injured by lifting it off the ground. It's not like a suction pad. The only place where it *might* happen is a very smooth, artificial surface, like a window. But there, you'll feel the resistance, and won't rip it off. Also, usually they retreat quite fast when in danger, you don't need half a minute for that.

@kupac @IngridHbn I'm skeptical of this as well. I've never seen a "torn mantle" on a snail, and I'm a biologist too.

@IngridHbn @synfinatic I did once capture a snail and imprison in inside an electric cage. I wanted to know how much voltage is required to make a line they will not cross but won't actually kill them.

Its three volts. That's all. Surprisingly low. Once I had that, easy enough to put some strips of copper tape around my lettuce and build the world's tiniest electric fence.

(Then the bloody leaf-miners ruined half of it instead.)

@kupac @IngridHbn The apparent high production cost of the image makes it appear trustworthy. Good illustrations, professional seeming graphic design. But I see other commenters pointing out it is likely AI generated based on the origin. It's often impossible to tell these days. Even the slop-slingers have access to models good enough pass a close inspection.

@IngridHbn Thank you for sharing this! I have pet giant African landsnails and the way I explain it is the shell is hard, like your fingernails, but it would hurt if someone picked you up by your fingernails too because they're connected to delicate tissue. I'd also add that sometimes touching the shell isn't enough - some of my snails are more cautious than others and retract immediately, whereas with some of the more bold ones you have to (gently!) tap repeatedly. Also they're less likely to go back in if they're eating something they like. It really does show that even creatures as simple as snails have distinct personalities and preferences

Tangential fun fact: snails intentionally stab each other during mating. Look up "love dart"!

@IngridHbn It's true that you can cause mantle collapse in a snail by picking it up too roughly, but this image itself is clearly AI slop.

@kupac @IngridHbn on the one hand this reply matches my experience, but on the other i've noticed a lot of normies are much, much more hasty and brutal with things who may benefit from this
