@geospacedman @kibcol1049 MP3? Youngin'!
We just had to settle for the MIDI version, none of this waveform stuff.
@stuartl @geospacedman @kibcol1049 MOD files went hard tho, if you had a tracker to play them.

*We* had to make do with a live orchestra in the corner of our sitting room.
Tip of the hat (or should I say "Drop of a hat"?) to Flanders and Swann

@TheLancashireman @stuartl @kibcol1049 I should probably credit Hugh from the Armando Iannucci show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ15EdEOncc

@TheLancashireman @geospacedman @kibcol1049 I think the live orchestra is rather a significant upgrade in fidelity compared to a MP3.
Not very portable though.

Not if it's in your sitting room, I suspect. All the windows and the crockery in the cupoards would rattle.

@kibcol1049 I remember dialup to connect to an ad free internet, worse than that I remember punch cards .

I remember when the Web was new. I remember hoping that it wouldn't take off, because I had to pay for dialup by the minute, whereas, before the Web, I could just log in, collect email and news, send my messages and hang up again, all within a minute or so. Much cheaper!

@kibcol1049 @TheMNWolf Yep for example I used an Archimedes to browse the Internet in the early days and midi files weren't a thing on that platform, but we did have lots of repositories of tracker music.

The chamber orchestra was less intrusive and was so called because you could put it back under the bed when you'd finished with it.

@kibcol1049 I’m so old I remember when they added iframes to HTML. I remember thinking the web was really starting to go downhill. Those were such innocent times.

@FreakyFwoof @kibcol1049 @TheMNWolf Yeah shame they didn't have a proper screen reader for the Archimedes. It didn't really work without a mouse to be honest.

@harrymuzz At my first job, the computer room temperature was controlled with double door air lock to enter. The computer was huge with punch card operators typing and huge floor to ceiling reel to reel tapes. The print outs were on large sheets of paper and took several runs for all the errors to be corrected. With programmers, inputters and clerks, there were about 8 staff. Nowadays a kid of 8 or 9 could do it all and more on a smartphone and 30 times quicker! Hard to believe but true.

Use a rubber band around a small deck.
If the deck was more than an inch thick, draw a diagonal line on one edge face so if they got scrambled you could reassemble without sobbing.
Too big for a rubber band?
There were purpose-made boxes. -
@kibcol1049 I'm so old I remember when the internet was in black and white and they played an mp3 of the national anthem before it shut down every night.
