    @randahl Idk if this is the best decision. Since Germany strictly follows USA (and has #AFD in its starting positions for next election). But as we say "In der Not frisst der Teufel Fliegen." (Desperate times call for desperate measures.) Atm it is more save in Germany than in the USA.

    I wish all the people good luck and success with their papers and safe travels.

          @bufalo1973 Schengen is not the whole EU. Ireland is not in it. Cyprus is not in it. Non EU countries are in it. Anyway, It’s mostly about travel and not residence. But you can live in any EU member country plus a few others if you are an EU citizen. Which is what I think you meant.

                @randahl

                Most people who immigrate and acquire US citizenship are thinking or want to reclaim their original citizenship and passport as a safeguard, or want to leave and go back home.

                Months ago, I spoke with a uni friend who is Australian and married to a yank, and has a US citizenship, and has been living over there for the last decade.

                In recent months, she has been exploring the possibility of having dual citizenship (Australian and American). She was in the process of reclaiming her Australian citizenship and passport because she never wanted to lose her Australian citizenship or passport, even after becoming a US citizen.

                  Given that the AfD now has around 20% of the vote here (and another big party has really problems to keep themselves away from the far right) ... while I understand their reasons, I'd recommend to read up a bit on current German politics first.

                  Make no mistake: As far as I am concerned they're welcome. But I'd really see "back to Germany" as a Hail Mary pass, if I were them.

                                      @randahl I did it during the first Trump regime. It’s an incredibly ironic thing. But I am here because my grandfather made the choice to leave Germany in time. Options protect us. Reclaiming them is liberating and healing. ❤️‍🩹

                                        It still permits EU residency for the time being.

                                          @glitzersachen I understand your point. IMO it is a question of quick & possible solutions rather than personal preference. 20% is not 50%. It might be safer to move quickly now & see what can be a better option in a few years - I doubt GER will turn Nazi within a few years, so that allows for time & planning. Also: in GER there is an additional safety net preventing a state going fully Nazi too quickly: the EU. Although I agree, the drift to extreme right throughout Europe is scary.
