Payment processor fees would eat it
When someone sends me 1€ for wafrn, I recive like 68 cents approx.
30 cents + 2% approx.
2€? 1.68
3€? 2.67
Like that.
Unless its more than 3€ you are paying money to paypal or mastercard

@Edent I would be very strongly against that. Incentivising people to make particularly notable posts will encourage all sorts of bad actors to post inflammatory and untrue rubbish.

@Edent I would like this as a feature, but I wouldnt like to see it as prominently as that. Maybe by clicking on someone's profile.

It also looks like the merchant gets no info about the customer - which might also be problematic if an individual/company is sanctioned.sanctioned
I'm sure it is a technically clever system, but doesn't seem to meet user needs. -

@Edent I think we a standard for this across the whole Fediverse. I need it for Manyfold, and Bandcamp, Castopod and many more would want it too.

@Edent reminds me of the original goal of https://www.axate.com/ which provided APIs for micro transactions for news sites.

unless you have a magic way to bypass any payment processor fees then that proposal goes straight to trash, because with small amounts you just give money to paypal/credit card companies/stripe/whatever payment processor exists
not to mention it would probably be a headache to setup for some admins

@Edent Credit card payment facilitated by something as easy as Apple Pay and as trusted as a UK or EU business. I wouldn't want some US bank or business screwing this up.

@Edent With minimal effort, eg Google Wallet or via direct payment link / QR code to a UK/EU bank.

@duncanlock I don't know where you are in the world, but in the UK and Europe it is free to transfer a single penny to any account.
I use tap-to-pay on low value transactions all the time. I even bought a single apple from a greengrocer once!

Not really. In the UK, I pay a fixed % for tap-to-pay card transactions.SumUp charge as little as 0.99% whether you're charging £1 or £500. My corner shop prefers that I pay by card for a chocolate bar rather than a £20 note.

@davidgerard @Edent @duncanlock Yes, the shop will have paid the transaction fee for this and it will have been a fairly large proportion of the payment.
Not as large in the UK as in the USA, but still a flat fee per transaction plus a percentage of the payment amount.
The payment providers that offer simple percentage pricing (eg. Square at 1.75% and SumUp at 1.69%) are able to do so because they insist on a minimum transaction amount of £1.

Their fees are rounded to a whole number of pennies per transaction using Banker's rounding (Round Half to Even).
