On 1 February 1926, Vivian Maier was born.
Living most of her life as an unassuming nanny who worked and lived in Chicago, her passion for street photography was accidentally discovered and recognized after her death.
Taking more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, her body of work subsequently attracted critical acclaim, 'suffused with the kind of human understanding, warmth and playfulness that proves she was "a real shooter".'

In 2007, two years before her death, Maier failed to pay for the storage space she had rented on Chicago's North Side. Consequently, her negatives, prints, audio recordings and 8 mm films were auctioned. Three photo collectors bought parts of her work: John Maloof, Ron Slattery, and Randy Prow.
The photographer herself didn’t print most of her pictures — it’s Maloof who, quite possibly in abrogation of Maier’s own wishes, is making her work known today.

"A shadowy character, she often photographed her own shadow, possibly as a way of being there and simultaneously not quite there."

Agreed, I saw some of her work in the Noack Galery, Berlin in 2022.
The details of her Rolleiflex-shots are astonishing.
