Not true AT ALL. Fungi feed on every imaginable source: live insects, poop, dead grass and logs, soil, and a great many are symbiotic with host plants, providing mutual benefit. See mycorrhizal fungi. These last ones are very common and are like a necessary substrate that whole ecosystems rely on.

On the fediverse, posts rarely go viral. But at times, they will go "fungal", like mycelium quietly working its way through the substrate, popping up again like mushrooms every few months to make another quick round before going dormant again.

@Mikal ... and that should be considered a feature, not a bug 🙂

If something manages to go viral/fungal it most likely deserves it because it has not been artificially curated to do so.

Oh, for sure! It's one of the interesting things about this place. It also proves that social networks are more interesting and fun if they're filled with organically interesting things posted by real people instead of whatever can be algorithmically amplified to increase engagement and ad impressions.

And, uh, case in point, the post just got 32...33...34 boosts 🍄‍🟫
