It was Erik's big debut! We were literally screwing the last few bits on him the night before. He still has an oil leak, hopefully get onto that this weekend.
But he was hugely popular and had lots of people come check him out. People were even interested in Frank, I've never had so many compliments about him!
They are both painted Mars Red, and we discovered there's variances in VAGs Mars Red from the 70's to the 80's.

This 1956 VW Beetle is a time machine. Always garaged. The current owners have had it around 20 years, bought from little old lady so low mileage. The interior is all intact and original, even the seats aren't cracked. It's been washed twice in 20 years. Just amazing!

@tikibunnyimports most of them are imports here but for a weird year or two, Nissan sold the first gen here at dealerships.

@vwdasher When I was a kid, there was a house in the neighborhood that had an old, light-blue VW Beetle sat out front. It was always parked there. Fairly sure it din't run. It was a landmark in the area. Grass, small trees, grew around it. It was there when I graduated high school, when my family moved away.
I was back in that neighborhood a year ago to visit, to see the area. The Beetle was long since gone.

@vwdasher There had always been an old, yellow sports car parked next to it, in the same non-running condition. Just left there to rust away, to be claimed by nature. Just like the Beetle, that car is also gone now.

@rand__althor I had a house near me with a 70s Chryler sedan in the yard that steadily rusted away until it finally vanished, probably collapsed eventually. Was there was years.
