I'm a rule follower.

I'm a rule follower. I have always been a rule follower. When I was a kid, I was entered into a show where moms made matching outfits for their daughters and their dolls. We were told to follow the white lines around a tennis court so that everyone could see us. I took it literally. I walked that line like a tightrope, heel to toe, never stepping off the line and creating havoc behind me as the other kids piled up in a traffic jam.

I'm the opposite of most people I know. I still read instructions before assembling anything or plugging in anything new.

I feel very fortunate that I was able to translate that into a career and I think it is probably the skill most people value me for - knowing the rules and how to work ethically and effectively within those walls.

But even I know when rules should be abandoned or ignored. It is not in moments of self interest, or when the chance of profit outweighs the risk, it is when the rules are used against entire communities and populations.

It is now.
