"The United States is being ushered off the international stage.
-
"It is historic because it marks the end of a productive chapter in the history of trans-Atlantic relations and, face it, the end of American leadership in the world as we have known it. But it is also of great consequence because it marks a massive, ugly, public defeat of Trump and the establishment for all to see of the means by which the menace who is America’s president can be contained and, where necessary, defeated."

"Everyone needs to forget everything they think they know about Donald Trump and just see him as Vladimir Putin sees him. As a useful idiot that can destroy America from the inside. ...
Trump for President was a Russian initiative, dating back to the 1980s, when Trump — upon his return from his first trip to Moscow — placed $100,000 worth of newspaper ads attacking NATO."

@wdlindsy "a useful idiot that can destroy America from the inside."
I thought that about him since he was doing his TV show that fires people for entertainment.

Trump has contempt for democratic norms. He wants to move America’s pieces to the other side of the chessboard, alongside those whose systems and methods he finds more congenial—Russia, China, El Salvador, Turkey, and Hungary."

"There is a way to file for divorce from Donald Trump and Europe needs to grab the opportunity.
To the public it will look as if nothing has changed. But behind the scenes the EU and the UK could close the joint bank account and cut up the credit cards, or at least set in motion a form of financial separation that limits the power of a controlling former partner."

@wdlindsy and for some of us, we always knew that what was under the mask was an ugly nightmare. Too bad we weren't believed.

@wdlindsy@toad.social Trump believes in one thing. Trump believes in Trump. Nothing else.
His base haven't understood yet that upon the day their interests conflict with his, or even simply become inconvenient to his, he will turn on them without a second thought. -

@wdlindsy while I agree with what Mona Charen says, I suggest not to elevate her voice. She helped get us here and her love of money over principles, by lying about Mamdabi being a communist for example, will not help us get out of this situation.

@mathematicalsynesthesia I understand your position about Charen, and I share it vis-a-vis all the never Trumpers. At the same time, my own inclination is to make common cause with anyone speaking out against a rabid, very dangerous and powerful fascist regime, even when those I stand in solidarity with come from starting points I can't especially appreciate. I don't think we have the luxury of divisive purism given what we're up against.

@wdlindsy I am not going for divisive purism, I am pointing out that even after all this she made the biggest of deals about Mamdani rather than see how her actions contributed to getting us there.
