Every generation has its own Wuthering Heights, apparently, but I cannot quite get over the incredible 2000s-ness of this 2009 version’s DVD cover, starring Tom Hardy as Professor Heathcliff Snape.

I might have paid more attention to it TBH.
Is there more to it than period romance? Did I miss something good just because I didn't like the kind of people who kept talking about it?
(Didn't like as a teen. I was very much "ew it has kissing" for most of my early years. I grew up a little... maybe. )

@futurebird It’s more gothic and overwrought, but also quite complicated. Like Cathy dies halfway through the book, and a lot of the adaptations stop without telling the rest of the story.

@futurebird @Nickiquote I don’t like it, because I consider many of the relationships described to be toxic, and the Heathcliff-Catherine… thing… to be borderline abusive. But, uh, tastes vary. I hear some people like it.

@aprilfollies @futurebird @Nickiquote That's the impression I got finally reading the book.. which I had avoided as a teen bc every movie misrepresents it as a romance.
This is a story about revenge, toxic families, generational trauma.. and (ultimately) breaking free of that pattern.

@aprilfollies @futurebird @Nickiquote Every adaptation fixates on a 'romance' which is:
- first 1/4 book only
- between very young angry teens
- toxic, tempestuous, and falls apart quickly.Then ignores or rushes the whole "sets in motion a trail of destruction rippling down the years and across families" part.
ie the main theme and Most Of The Book.. I want to see *that* movie!
Like Romeo and Juliet the Romance is NOT the whole story - it's the catalyst for the story.
