@CiaraNi I am copying all of my 3Tb of pics from OneDrive to external SSDs...It turns out, download speeds are either capped or crippled as the regular speeds are 2-5Mb. But I have optical 1Gb link...Took me 3 days to download 400Gb. Still in progress
@locadeserta Ah this is familiar! Once I got my lovely shiny new SDD, I was startled to discover how sloooowly the process of downloading my images was. It's taking me weeks, bit by bit, to get through the still ongoing process. But it's good because it's made me make better choices about what files to keep.
-
@CiaraNi been a long time.Linux user, so no M$ for me, but have recently de googled completely.
Tuta and Proton for mail
Ente for photos
Mega for general cloud storage@kcpoole Well done on already being deGoogled. I have bare minimum google on an Android phone, but still have some final steps to do. That'll have to wait until I have rid myself of Microsoft.
Mega for general cloud storage - a new name to me, thanks for mentioning. I must investigate.

@CiaraNi There are so many people who take either an absolutist (must do everything at once and everything must be perfect) or a defaitist (nothing one does matters at all) approach.
My opinion is quite simply: *every step you take toward better leaves you in a better position!* Even the small steps.
Just looking at the steps you have already taken (and committed to), you're probably *already* in a better position than a *huge* number of people. Don't dismiss the progress you've already made.
@mkj Thanks for the supportive words. Much appreciated. And yes, agreed - it can be counterproductive to be either an absolutist or a defeatist. That can apply to politics and the climate crisis as well as enshittification and big tech, I think.

Why is no one asking these questions:
Why are the wealthiest corporations shoving AI so hard?
Why are billionaires so keen on this dubious product?
Why are billions of investment dollars being wasted on this white elephant?
Why are politicians running away from AI issues?

@CiaraNi I am inspired! I moved to Libre a few months ago & set up a Tuta account. I still have photos & calendar on iCloud though. It is a process
@SCampbell Agreed. It truly is a process. We were entangled by and in the Big Tech web for so many decades, it's not a surprise, I suppose, that it is not that simple to just walk away. Sounds like we're walking the same route - Libre and Tuta, and then the photos To Do. Good luck to us both, I think

-
@CiaraNi Lovely! Good luck!
@rtn Thank you

-
@lfzz That was exactly the reference I was going for

These are some good questions!
Are these rhetorical questions?
Or would you like me to have a go without blocking me thereafter? -
@gambolputte @CiaraNi @Tutanota indeed, I am thinking of making an account for my wife as well to start with, and start sharing between the two of us. Tuta to Tuta. It's slightly expensive to have two, and maybe later even more accounts, but it is such a relief to f. ex. finally feel safe to build a contact list to name just one thing.

Before I could pick my 2026 goal for #DanmarkSkifter, I did a digital status. I was mildly surprised when I saw my 2025 digital changes together. I looked at the list and thought: ’Tell me you hang out in the Fediverse without telling me you hang out in the Fediverse.’
From Outlook to Tuta
From Office to Libre
From MS Authenticator to Ente Authenticator
From Google Play to F-Droid
From Spotify to AntennaPod
From Firefox to Vivaldi
From DuckDuckGo to NoAIDuckDuckGo
And I bought a back-up drive.From Google Play to F-Droid
I find that for some applications further options are needed.
https://uptodown-android.en.uptodown.com/android
Pls take a look at NetGuard git, it prevents apps on android phones from calling home to mommy and blocks ads.
I donated to the developer and got an unlocking key for extra features.
Getting setup can sometimes be difficult but well worth the bother when you see all the places your phone tries to connect to.
-
@Doomscroll @cbrankin I randomly found AntennaPod after switching to F-Droid and it instantly became my favourite podcast app. I think https://noai.duckduckgo.com is worth a look, right enough, to get away from the constant AI.

@Kerplunk Thanks for these tips

@jwcph Oh that is really good to know. Mange tak. I couldn't find an entry point for NextCloud as a Just Make It Work non-tech end user. Great to have a provider name - thanks. I will look into a free trial account and take it from there. (That's how I moved to Tuta - the free account was so good and simple that I subscribed almost immediately.) Tak for hjælpen.
@CiaraNi I was in the exact same situation - I can't remember how I found The Good Cloud but it works & customer service works well, too
Held & lykke! -
’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.
@CiaraNi in case it's helpful to anyone, I finally managed to get my entire workflow to be open source software, and have listed it here:

@Npars01
@anonymous over on Instagram has been posting some very interesting ideas about how AI will be able to control mass behavior. That is what they are working on with their surveillance network. Complete control. Neural implants are coming. William Gibson is a visionary.

@BashStKid Thanks for the tips. I don't know what a NAS is, so I am probably not the right one for that. I don't audio stream anything. I listen to CDs and the radio. And I never watch TV or films, so no alternative to streaming needed there either. Only now that you mention this do I realise that my analogue (/dull/old-fashioned) habits must make it easier for me to make digital changes than others. I have fewer things to consider. I'm lucky there.
@CiaraNi @BashStKid wow, another one with "less than average" needs
Last year I started to wonder if my tips and answers could be helpful (sometimes people asked me about degoogle during more public BigTech migration waves) as I did everything very easy mode. Was already full Linux long time and listened to local music files when I decided to consciously cut Big Tech off my life for privacy and ethical reasons. And most degoogle/migration manuals are long and detailed because of so many services and apps people use.
And wow, someone else not watching in this video-everything-cursed era!

@madargon @BashStKid 'Less than average' needs
Am happy to be below average in this case, because it means I have slightly less work to do 'dis-enshittifying' my digital life, so to speak. -
@sebastian @Flatus Thanks for the tip. I did browse around in NextCloud's solutions but couldn't see a simple off-the-shelf one for a non-tech person like me who just wants it to plug-and-play work. I've been waiting to see Tuta's drive. Then the DanmarkSkifter campaign nudged to me to stop faffing around - get off OneDrive now, get the photos backed up, then pick the right cloud solution after that. Otherwise I'll never take that final step.
@CiaraNi @sebastian @Flatus
I use hetzner's storage share ( https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/ ), 5€ a month for 1 TB not just for storage but a full nextcloud instance that's a steal. I have not just my backup there but also my photos, with the Memories app I have all the things I would expect from Google Photos or whatever
