Growing up, I understood “urban jungle” to mean the harsher side of city life: the daily grind, the mean streets. For me this is encapsulated by the clog of highway traffic, as people head tiredly to work or return tiredly home — as the Police song goes, “packed like lemmings into tiny metal boxes / contestants in a suicidal race.”

Here’s the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. I love many things about NYC; the BQE isn’t one of them.
